I remember a lot of worried murmurs on this forum when that ident appeared, correctly predicting the direction ITV1 was about to go.
Absolutely right - back in the days when we could ask whether Carlton and Meridian were using it!
Me back in 2001 posted:
I wouldn't like to see one generic ITV1 ident permanently by any stretch of the imagination but losing the hearts for a week is a relief.... As Andrew well pointed out earlier, I really don't think we can read much into this.
Shows how much I know...
BTW 'South in View' has uploaded some great clean clips from 2001-2003
I don't think unified ITV1 branding would have been half as badly received if the resulting idents were as well executed as that one.
ITV1's rebranding was never going to be well received, but they didn't do themselves any favours with those awful 'celebrity idents' in 2002.
The later CGI set was slightly better, but since then they've gone downhill, and back to "people doing something" or "things happening" (as had been discussed), which really doesn't say anything to me about the channel other than "This is how cheaply I can produce an ident".

There was a very good reason as to why ITV went with the celebrity idents', it was to highlght he fact yes were changed our name to a single brand BUT look all the people/shows you like and love are still the same and nothing important has changed.

I seem to recall that the continuity announcers made a point to say the regional names as much as possible while these idents were used. Might be misremembering that with what LWT announcers did near the end (saying London Weekend Television in full on pretty much all announcements in the run up to October 2002).

I don't understand. You didn't like the celeb idents, yet you don't like later ones as they don't say anything to you about the channel where the celebs ones arguably did. Begs the question - what actually would you have liked?
Interestingly this clip demonstrates how the GMG regions lazily just squished the full 16:9 ident into 4:3 when going into non-widescreen programmes, rather than cropping it at the sides. So we ended up with the logo looking too tall in many junctions.
