BFM have launched yet another local channel. BFM DICI serves the southern French Alps and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

The channel replaced D!CI TV which was acquired by Altice last summer.

The sub-opts are branded BFM Alpes or BFM Provence.

Whilst here I guess London Live still are now a year without news?

How much of the schedule for these BFM channels is local and how much is simulcast from the national channels?


The local channels are 100% produced locally. When not live, they'll update the loop of news through the day and overnight.

Local reporters however do feature on BFMTV which has improved their local reporting outside the Paris Region.

I never knew about this! I presume that the same happens in French speaking Switzerland

Switzerland AFAIK is more permissive, having had many Swiss versions of the French main channels for more time

Swiss law in that respect has helped because Swiss providers are allowed to rebroadcast FTA streams from foreign countries as long as they can be received in the country, although there are Swiss versions of the TF1 and M6 portfolio and C8, same for the German channels which have Swiss commercials.

That would make sense re renaming to M6. But M6 is actually not widely available in Belgium as it stands currently.

As RTL is (currently) part of the same group and has the rights for most of its programming, they block M6 and its sister channels from being carried on Belgian cable/IPTV, even though it’s an overspill FTA signal that would otherwise have historically been received at the border terrestrially, then shared between the télédistribution networks via microwave and carried (as happened with France 2, France 3 and also TF1 in the days before their Belgian advertising opt-out replaced the off-air feed). Ironically, this method of receiving at the border then sharing with the other cable networks is exactly how RTL-TVI and later on Club RTL started out, being broadcast from Luxembourg with the UHF feed picked up by a cable network in Southern Wallonia for distribution. I’m not sure of the Belgian legal technicalities but I think RTL’s blocking/lobbying of the cable networks, so they can’t/don’t do the same with M6, has been a little controversial.

M6 can be received terrestrially of course in areas bordering France, or via satellite, but the vast majority of Belgium gets TV via cable (Voo/Orange), or the newer IPTV services of (Proximus etc.). A lot of municipalities apparently have pretty restrictive planning rules on satellite dishes!

I've finally been able to borrow a friend's Salto account and it's very good. The Android TV app has a nice layout and is easy to use.

There are a few more channels that I expected, it's not just the TF1, France Télévisions and M6 portfolio, there's also NRJ12 and Chérie 25 from NRJ, L'Equipe 21 and TV5MONDE.

Given that this wonderful forum will close very soon, I am taking this opportunity to ask the question that I didn't dare to ask it before, do you think that France 4 may be saved from closure? Given that France 4's closure was inspired by the closure of BBC Three a few years before, now that BBC Three is coming back as an actual TV channel, could this help to avoid the closure of France 4? Like the BBC, I suspect the linear channel will have to close for a period before France Télévisions realise that there is still some PSB worthiness in relaunching France 4.

As this may well be the final post I post in the French TV thread, I'd like to thank those who have posted in this thread who have shared the same niche interest in UK terms discussing French television presentation, especially those who live in France who have a broader understanding of how the French tv industry works.

I sincerely hope that you all come over to TVLF and continue to discuss rebrands of French channels and if ever Sophie Le Saint will ever do a full week at Franceinfo!

I am already there mate! But the French TV thread on TV Live Forum still hasn't started mate, we need you there so that we can see if Sophie Le Saint will ever do a full week on France Info! Also to see who will end up buying the M6 Group!
