A bunch of French pay TV channels have closed down recently or are facing closure. This includes TF6, Stylia and two M6 Music channels that closed down around New Year's. Later this year, Canal+ will turn off its long-running TV series channel Jimmy and its food and 'home' channels, Cuisine+ and Maison+. Meanwhile LCI and Paris Première also have uncertain futures.
Some of these channels used to be quite significant. Jimmy is one of the oldest satellite channels in France, having been on the air since 1990 and TF6 was once one of the most watched satellite channels.
AIUI, the closures are a result of increased competition from
DTT and the Canal+/TPS merger. Before the merger, the channels could be paid a premium for being exclusive with either platform. Now that Canal+ have a monopoly, they don't need to pay as much and the old business models don't work anymore.
Below are the closures of TF6 and Stylia. Both occured on 31 December, neither was particularly well executed.
