I'd have thought it would most likely be snapped up by a channel currently using COM5, which I think is/was due to close in the not too distant future.

COM7 surely? COM5 closing would be rather big news! Laughing

Not just Comedy Central like that though. Who remembers the varied schedules of channels during the analogue (and early digital) days, and the repetitive screenings of the same few shows we instead get now?

Arguably their instep with how the 'viewers' want to consume that content. The amount of people I've seen online recently complaining that they have to fork out for another streaming service because the show they constantly binge in the background (usually Office USA, Friends or some other US sitcom) has left Netflix.

These people aren't even watching the shows, they're just having them play on their TV while doing chores or using their computer just as noise in the background.

I suppose the digital channels are the non-streaming versions of this.

Ah yes, that's the one I meant.

CNN would be my first choice, no doubt it will end up being a shopping channel.

Not me sadly. My first experience of multichannel (unless you count briefly watching Sky at my cousins' house) was when my parents got digital cable in 2002. Before that it was the five terrestial channels and a snowy S4C.

I think I would have *loved* watching UK Gold in its early form, before the UKTV network was launched.

I think this is probably more likely to be on COM 6 (Mux D), as that is currently carrying 14 SDTV streams compared to 16 on COM 5 (Mux C). Not altogether unexpected news, and we can only assume there might be another slot available in future.

I wouldn't be surprised if the winning channel is placed on LCN24 (outside of Scotland) to fill the gap, or if BBC move BBC FOUR to 24 nationwide, and the new service gets the LCN9 slot, which would be very hotly contested if so.

Whatever it is, it won't get channel 24 as the LCN policy has ruled out giving the same number to different channels (with the exception of Local TV services). The BBC won't move Four off 9, either, as it's entitled to a low EPG position as a PSB channel.

More than likely it will go to a broadcaster already on Freeview (in which case they could use one of their existing numbers), or possibly a certain news channel, which would go in the 230s anyway.

This is great news for Freeview, and I can imagine many people going after the slot (24/7 after all!)

Most likely will possibly be a news, religion or shopping channel, and while I wouldn't really see myself watching the latter 2, a news channel would be a welcome addition.

I would like a channel like CNN, Euronews, Sky Sports News, Eden, or even some pay channels like Comedy Central.

Overall, very exciting news!

The likelihood of seeing Comedy Central become a free-TV station is a bit of a fantasy in my eyes. Yes, it's free to air in some territories like the Netherlands and also on 24/7, but I can't see it happening. But it'd be a bit ironic if Channel 5 ends up launching a channel called "5 Shake" in similar terms to their neighbours down under.

Comedy Central is really poor now to be honest. Their daytime schedule at the moment seems to consist of Friends and nothing but Friends, plus one episode each of those famous comedy shows Baywatch and The A-Team. Gold may love Only Fools and Horses just as much, but at least their schedule has some variety to it.

Thinking about it I suppose it’ll end up being GB News or the new news channel from News UK.

Might be a bit of a bidding war.
