In Utopia , Jack is reacquainted with The Doctor (portrayed by David Tennant) having previously met him in 2005 (portrayed by Christopher Eccleston).
The Doctor asks if he's had work done on that occasion, and the response from Jack is the same.
The exchange arguably works even better between Jack and Jodie's Doctor, bearing in mind Jack had previously known the male Eccleston/Tennant versions.

If true, it's a shame her final series will be a truncated one.

She's been rumoured to be leaving ever since she got the job, beginning with "she's only doing one series because she's a mother". Last year it was twice rumoured she'd be leaving at the end of this special.

Yes, three series does seem to entail the average run for the majority of Doctors, however Chibnall has talked of his 'Five Year Plan' which makes me think that Jodie may stay until the 60th anniversary even if Series 13 is followed by a number of specials that have been spread across a couple of years.

Although she started in 2017 so by the time she finishes it'll likely be 2022.

True, 3 series is the norm but with her series being shorter I wouldn't have been surprised if she'd done 1 more.

Actors contracts are often agreed for 3 series with agreed pay rises per series. 4th series would need a new deal and often require big pay rises. Might be one of the reasons. Also all parties might have agreed to do 3 and be done.

Number of years and number of series are not necessarily the same thing, of course.

Capaldi and Whittaker have both had "gap years" (2016 and 2019*, respectively), meaning that a 3-series tenure = 4 calendar years. There is a precedent for a Doctor's era ending with a handful of thinly-spread specials rather than a "series" as such (David Tennant). And one of Matt Smith's series was broadcast split into two "half series".

*(Albeit with a sole festive episode in each of those two series-less years)

Such faffing about with the broadcast pattern of DW makes it difficult to know how the current head writer anticipated things were going to pan-out when using a phrase like "five year plan".

Did he take any Gap Years into account or not, when he said that? (e.g. Whittaker only doing 3-4 series over 5 years)

Did his use of the phrase always anticipate him straddling two different incarnations of the Doctor (just like RTD and Moffat did)?

Did he actually mean five SERIES (which could could mean e.g. 7 years, if there are Gap Years) but choose his words poorly?

Goodness knows.

Covid further muddies the water of exactly how production and broadcast of DW are ultimately going to progress henceforth.

I think Jodie will do a couple of specials in 2022 with a new Doctor introduced on NYD 2023 to coincide with the 60th anniversary. I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC plan to have a new showrunner alongside a new Doctor.

I wonder if they'll go for another female Doctor or if they'll go back to a male Doctor again?
