She's only mildly better now, but I wouldn't be asking her what word defines "cool".

Yep - though it's worth remembering that this was the era when JSP was going out with Normski (who presented Dance Energy) and was clubbing all the time (by all accounts). In the interview I remember her saying that "def" was used in the context of "Something being well def" meaning it was cool...

Yes, but DEF were effectively continuing letters from BBC, and since it was on the second channel, DEF II.

Not sure what you are trying to say. If the BBC were the ABC then I could see some odd symmetry in what you say - but why does DEF follow BBC ?

As I've mentioned above - DEF II was so-named because Janet Street-Porter wanted to co-opt some urban language to give the stripped programming a sense of "cool" and "relevance to the kids". She gave her reasons for using "DEF" (which almost nobody in the wider UK had ever heard as a word for "cool") in the interview I mentioned.

The II was almost certainly a link to BBC Two - so the combined result meant "Cool Two", "Hip Two" etc. I guess Roman numerals were used because they worked well as a design with the barcode-inspired logo they went with.
