Not a big fan of the new logo from first impressions. The 'Dancing On' wording looks quite bland and generic, and since someone here said the Ice bit looks like Loo that's now all I can see.
I was hoping they'd just adapt the previous logo as that was nice, unique and suited the programme well.

Unsure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but yesterday around 8.12 on GMB there was a preview of the updated theme music for the new series!

I forgot about this little gem. I think it's nigh on impossible that the other 2 judges would be Karen and Jason. It would be handbags at dawn.

Ah, but you're forgetting that after that, they both DID come back, and despite the hosts' constant insinuation that it was all going to kick off again at any second, it never did.

I reckon ITV may be building this up again as a potential X Factor replacement and Strictly rival in a few years time if the ratings don't improve for The X Factor and The Voice fails to make the mark ITV hope for.

I think it's fair to say that The X Factor is in terminal decline at this point after peaking in 2010. Though presumably it will continue to air until ITV have something that rates higher than it on Saturday nights, or reaches the same young audience.

X Factor has been on a downward spiral since 2012, especially when Cowell abandoned the show to try and launch the US version with utter failure. When he returned in 2014 the rot had set in. Strictly now hammers it into the ground each week. I always remember the utter smugness of Dermot O'Leary on Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 2008/09 where Arlene Philips was on the show and he just gloated over the ratings difference. He is not smiling now.

Will Dancing on Ice return to Elstree Studios or Shepperton Studios for this new re-launch? They moved to Shepperton in 2011 for one series. The George Lucas Stages 1 and 2 are run by BBC Studioworks in partnership with Elstree. With The Voice in LH2 Studios, Elstree would seem to be the perfect home for Dancing on Ice once again.

I believe they have their own studio, with the main studio and a practice studio side by side, at least that’s what was said when they announced the new Series on a This Morning.

X Factor and Strictly have both been running for the same amount of years, so age and longevity cannot be an excuse. It's just Strictly have managed to update the show and keep the show current and relevant to its audience way more effectively than X Factor have ever done. Strictly have even managed to do this even when losing one of their main hosts in the process. When Dermot left the show sky bombed even more so than it is now.

X Factor have alienated it's older audience by focussing on a younger audience demographic in recent series, and by doing so have slashed their viewing ratings.

Now that Dancing on Ice has had a chance to rest off air, the appetite for viewers is likely to return so long as they update the show effectively for 2018 and make the necessary changes to keep the show exciting and relevant to viewers.

Not sure I’d agree that Strictly has updated itself. It’s pretty much the same show every week as it’s always been.

The reason Strictly is ahead is that it’s a more fun and positive show - something X Factor have clearly tried to emulate this year, hence the sing-off now being between the top 2 instead of the bottom 2. Think it’s too little too late though - the show’s reputation is that it is manipulated and exploitative.

It pains me to say it, as I’ve watched it since the first series and always loved it, but it really could do with a year or 2 rest.

Strictly have been amping up the production values series-by-series, and have also been aware of their 'positivity' factor for a while.

For a while, Strictly had started to become to feel a bit tired. It doesn't feel tired any more...

The changes to the X factor this year are just bizarre though...

I'd say there are two prime reasons Strictly is where it is.

Firstly they didn't panic when the X Factor started thrashing it - they just had faith in what they were doing and appreciated the viewers they got rather than worried about the viewers they didn't - and of course they were still getting a very healthy audience themselves - indeed I think until a year or two ago they themselves were losing viewers every year, but at a much slower rate, and they didn't have as far to fall.

Secondly they've had consistency amongst the judges. This is the first year since 2010 that The X Factor has had the same judging line up two years running. Strictly have had a couple of enforced judging changes and of course a change in the presenting line up in that period, but it's only ever been one person a year and it's always been organic. I also think the appointment of Shirley this year says a lot about the difference - they went with someone qualified for the position, not just a name.

I did say at the time Simon was sacrificing XFUK to try and launch the US version but to be honest it did hold up pretty well in the three years he was away, and although ratings fell from the peak of 2010 I think it was still beating Strictly through to 2013. It was when Simon returned it seems to start going into freefall through a combination of a merry go round of judges, below par contestants and not fixing some issues with the format, especially the live shows. One thing I will say though for The X Factor this year is I do think they've got a much stronger line up of contestants than they've had for a few years.

Back to Dancing on Ice - I assume it's airing on Sundays (with The Voice on Saturdays), so it remains to be seen how it does. I always preferred it to Strictly when it did air as it seemed to take itself less seriously but there is no hiding really that it's back due to ITV being unable to find a replacement rather than popular demand.

I’ve long said that X Factor would be a much better show if they gave all the contestants a fair shot at winning. We saw last night (and with the judges having no say this year, it will be more obvious than ever) - the acts they don’t want to win and they want to go get given rubbish songs and productions. Simple as that.

With how much effort goes into producing the show, there is no reason why they couldn’t put on 12 amazing performances, but instead we get roughly 50-60% of them being underwhelming.

Two reasons, one is that Strictly skews older, older viewers are less likely to get bored of something aand move on as quickly

Younger viewers who did get bored of TXF are now themselves older, so are taking an interest in Strictly,

Thirdly, TXF was just so big in every possible way its hay day it was always going to come crashing down.

Not sure what any of this has to do with Dancing on Ice though.
