Merry Christmas everyone, and here's to a more peaceful 2021.
I've spent quite a lot of this year in the makeshift MCR in my spare room. While it's been nice having a bit of daylight for a change, I far prefer getting to be in the same room as my fantastic colleagues, who really have worked some magic to keep telly going under some quite challenging circumstances. Let's hope we can get back to some simpler and less socially distant times soon!
I've spent quite a lot of this year in the makeshift MCR in my spare room. I've missed the Christmas wishes, so instead I'll echo the hopes for 2021 being a better year for all, but we will all have a mountain to climb one way or another.
I don't think I (or my colleageus) could ever expected to be working on or involved with so many very different programmes, especially entertainment ones, that never would have used live facilities previously. The sports programmes that are the bread and butter of the Outside Broadcast work changed out of all recognision, and is unlikely to ever return to how we worked in 2019.
2020's woes have changed the way we will work across the industry (both radio and tv, and the ever expanding online work). It has changed the budgets available, the way we travel to site, or don't, and has driven the remote working model more quickly than any single other previous advance. It has therefore changed the acceptance of remote working for shows where it was never considered.
Normal working will push back from where we are now, but never return to the levels before.
2021 will be an interesting one, especially the later half of the year, to see where we now stand, and what the rest of the 20s will look like for broadcasting.
