Should BBC One become... just BBC?

My memory, and living in an overlap area, was ITV London, or ITV Southern, or just ITV.

However both sets of grandparents, and other family who lived on the Sussex coast, would often just say 'Southern' but that's not to say they didn't still mentally retain ITV as a name

I was just watching the Banging Bird Coverage/Big Banana Cakes trailer which then turns into a big BBC centred on screen and it made me think - wow!

Growing up in the Midlands in the 1970s, I don't recall anyone ever using anything other than ATV as a name.
Yes we were all aware it was part of a wider national ITV, even in those far away times we could understand that.

However even my old Nan, who refered to the Sunday People as the Sunday Pictorial never mentioned ABC at the weekends.
If she could keep up with it, then us younger folks had no excuse!

However, way down here on the southern fringe of ATV's region, it was referred to as 'Midlands ITV'

Although I was the only person I knew who lived in a house that had a third UHF aerial to receive it properly !

Not really when you consider there was an ATV London that ran concurrently with ATV Midlands. Maybe they just remember the distinction!

Well, in our area when Membury 405 line opened in 1965, ATV Weekdays on that, and weekends on Croydon !

True, it would never be called Thames, but in our house we probably referred to it more as '3' rather than ITV.... as in 'what's on 3?'

My dad used the expression '3', and I use it today for my mum when suggesting an ITV programme she might enjoy.

I think you mean the Sunday Mirror, not the People. The Sunday People was always called the People (but not always SUNDAY People). The Pictorial is the Sunday Mirror.

Maybe you're just ahead of your time. I can perfectly imagine that in a decade or sos, when streaming has by far overtaken linear television, you'll probably end up with the channels slowly merging back together and just one or two BBC channels for highlights and programmes that are broadcast live. That'll likely just be called the BBC.

I do very much agree, though, that those BBC blocks by themselves on black are a thing of beauty. They've always looked at their best when they are by themselves - on the old ribbons ident, the old this week on the BBC trailers, the front of NBH. Perhaps that is the direction BBC branding should go - ditch the words, just have the BBC logo in different colour combinations - white on red for News, black on yellow for Sport (which they already do for the match graphics), pink on black for iPlayer.

So it was. I could have sworn it was the Sunday People!
