Yes funnily enough there was a BBC Three strand on both One and Two at different points during its first year, much like is being considered at the moment.

Initially there was a Sunday mid-morning slot called 'BBC Three on BBC Two'. This was short-lived though and it later moved to the more sensible time of late night on Monday on BBC One (no prizes for guessing what it was renamed to).

That was from the days when Digital TV wasn't as widespread

They did the same thing with BBC FOUR - offering a taste of what it had to offer to analogue viewers on TWO, as with CBBC and CBeebies.

With virtually all of the BBC channels (not withstanding HD simulcasts) having 98.5% coverage on PSB1 there was no need to continue the strands - BBC THREE is similar in this regard, ONE and TWO are obligated to provide the content as laid out by the Trust, and it also alleviated any problems with people accessing the shows on the internet particularly if their connection speed is mediocre.

BBC3 programmes were on BBC1 from the very first week - here they are the day after it opened.

Looking on Genome, the regular weekly slot on Monday nights as 'BBC Three on BBC One' wasn't until the end of March, before which it seems to have been on multiple days during the week, and 'BBC Three on BBC Two' had its last airing at the beginning of March so it didn't last long at all.
