This is an excellent idea in principle and demonstrates that RTÉ are trying to do something clever with limited resources. When the Breakfast News programme launches, the channel will be able to carry recorded news summaries all morning.
When I tuned in last night, however, the channel was showing a loop of the Nine O'Clock News, starting at random times. It's not exactly the kind of dip-in service that it aims to be. I can watch the Nine news on demand anyway so there's no reason I'd start watching it from the middle.
Yesterday the left hand column carried weather and financial markets, just as horribly squashed and stretched as the referendum results are today. The ticker is bizarre and the DOG far too big.
All in all it's a bit of a mess. But it's good to see that RTÉ are finally making moves towards a news channel and hopefully this will be tweaked in the coming years to develop into something respectable.
PS: some lovely animation on straps today. Why do RTÉ only pull it out of the bag when there's an election or referendum?
This is great to see, but it could be improved so much. I would think the graphics are big so they display clearly on a small streamed window in the browser. I would have loved to see this channel launch on UPC. We've some really bad channels like DCTV eating space. RTE News Now would be a better addition, even if it's rough. Great potential though, but they have to figure out how to use it and cross promote other live streams etc.
