I watched Newswatch on BBC N24 this morning. It's much the same every week, viewers put across well argued observations about BBC News output, arrogant BBC suit is wheeled on to totally dimiss their concerns. Today's was even worse.

Item 1: A viewer put the case for mainstream BBC News programmes to have more foreign news stories, saying that current output is far too parochial. Editor of 10pm news doesn't address the well made points, and basically says 'we prefer to do it this way, so bugger off'.

Item 2: Viewer points out that 6 weeks ago BBC News/Panorama had boldly asserted that Bob Wolmer had been murdered. This week BBC News tells us he wasn't murdered. So what went wrong with Paranoma's so called 'top class' journalism ? Question ignored.

Item 3: Viewers point out the totally crass nature of some 'BREAKING NEWS' banners on N24, placing then over pictures that are totally unrelated to the caption. Several examples were shown, culminating in the the words 'Paedophile Charged' over the top of someone else's picture. Again no response from the BBC.

The format reminds me of the good old days in the 1980s, and Right To Reply.
Except on that show Gus MacDonald would get his teeth in, and ask awkward questions to the producers and editors. This show is almost as soft and useless as Points of View.

It was fun a week ago though when Paul Kenyon was on defending the awful Panorama programme on Wi-Fi. He reeled off his fluff he'd prepared then they told him the Swedish expert they'd used had been voted 'misleader of the year' by 1600 scientists over there. His sheepish 'ooo, that's not good, is it?' was great.

Indeed. I was also amused at how on the morning of his appearance on Newswatch, he'd effectively checked again the 'Inverse Square Law' with an "eminent scientist". It's quite obvious he fails to grasp the basic principles behind it, all of which are no more than O Level maths and physics. What's are the minimum academic qualifications for a TV journalist ? Not much by the look of it..

I've seen a few editions of this show and I thought that this was the best one so far . Even if the BBC do not act on the criticisms featured then at least they have been noted. The ground swell of criticism on BBC news content continues to grow and who knows perhaps one day we will see these criticisms dealt with and changes made.
