Nothing wrong with getting experienced reporters, especially editors, to read the news. Tim Ewart was a newsreader at times during the early 1990s
If you watched Tim's stint presenting Newsroom South East you'll probably remember why this wasn't a great demonstration of 'reporter makes good presenter'. I always felt sorry for Gwenan Edwards sat next to him...
It kind of demonstrated the reverse, and Tim returned to reporting...

I'm not from England and I'd be too young to remember his stint in Newsroom South East even if I was from that area. I know he used to be a newsreader only because of TV Ark.

You're right there. Tim Ewart was a horribly wooden presenter. It did Newsroom South East - a distinctly no frills news operation - no favours whatsoever.

He's very good; very natural. I could see Jon Kay stepping up formally to become the second lead male presenter on Breakfast once the inevitable happens and Charlie Stayt succeeds Bill Turnbull as the main male anchor.
Jon Kay on Breakfast is a good example.

It doesn't hurt that his wife trains presenters for a living. I was lucky enough to receive some of her tutelage when working at the BBC.

Here's Tim Ewart and Gwenan Edwards on Newsroom SE from 1996 for comparison.

His delivery - very flat and intonation was just wrong. No rapport with his fellow presenters - not that Newsroom South East was known for it.

Yes, and I think his wife is a former, well respected, BBC reporter. Jon Kay is one of those, relatively rare, reporters who can also present well.
