Looking at the graphics being used for the coming up at 6 sections, they seem a lot better quality then what they were when in the studio.
Simon Hardwick has confirmed to me that it won't be HD for a while:
@tvlive no. We're now feeding HD to transmission, last downscaler comes out the hannington feed at 9am but transmission are going through..

@tvlive .. A major upgrade programme themselves (of which this is part of) and regions will remain SD for a while longer. Getting closer tho

Just to slightly update that:
ITV News Meridian East is now crystal clear HD
ITV HD in the Meridian region is now broadcasting the East programme in true HD rather than upscaled. West region still SD for now.

Just seen it onscreen and it does look really good, doesn't it. Makes a nice change to see a bit of the newsroom.
A little surprised there wasn't a wide shot though for the start/end, maybe it would have given the game away a little too much how tucked away it is (although I think would still look good as a high shot with the cameras in view!)
I've only seen pics of the other sets so I'm intrigued to see Meridian's version on the big screen - the black background feels unfinished to me and I'm not sure if the shot of Maidstone bridge will work as well on the thin wide screens.

I am, It won't work well. it's never worked well.
As an image It's entirely unremarkable and belongs on a biscuit tin, chocolate box or placemat (obviously only once the relentless rush hour has been photoshopped out). I don't get the relevance of slow moving traffic on a Victorian bridge to a 21st century news broadcast.
It's not like it's an iconic bridge set in stunning surroundings in a major city in the region, like the Clifton Suspension Bridge is in the West. This is an unexceptional road bridge in a town in Kent that, I suspect, the majority of viewers in Dorset, the Isle of Wight, West Sussex, East Sussex, Essex, Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Surrey would struggle to identify if they were put on the spot.
It's such a large, awkward region covering many counties with several large cities it makes much more sense I think to avoid geographical references and instead plump for a 'newsroom' background as that's relevant to all content, no matter where you're watching from.

The bridge is in Maidstone.
I would like to see a move back to the Spinnaker Tower on the 'west' edition. For the 'north' opt a lovely Oxford view but I know that will never happen!

Kate Haskell on the sofa tonight - surely a first? At first glance you could easily of thought it was Susan Osman!

Err, excuse me! Kent's county town! And the bridge was designed by the same gentleman who designed London's sewers (and, I think, is a relation to Peter Bazalgette?)
Seriously, I agree with both of you. A more relevant picture should be used for the west of the region - and probably something a little more iconic for the East - Canterbury Cathedral, perhaps?

Although I've had friends and family here in the Thames Valley who have commented that they thought it was Caversham Bridge in Reading. I suppose if Thames Valley folk think it's their bridge............
