ITN names editor for London news
By Wale Azeez

Stuart Thomas, a former editor of LBC Radio, has been appointed editor of the forthcoming ITN-produced London news service.

Thomas was ITN's youngest ever editor at 27 while in charge of LBC 1152AM and News Direct between 2000 and 2002, before their sale to Chrysalis Group. Prior to that he was news editor at ITN's radio arm, Independent Radio News.

More recently Thomas was news editor on Channel 4 breakfast show RI:SE - scrapped this week - before rejoining ITN at ITV News.

Thomas joins the London news operation with immediate effect to oversee the transition from London News Network to a new editorial outfit.

Once the service is up and running he will have responsibility for the flagship programme London Tonight, as well as the London regional news daytime bulletins.

ITN said it hoped Thomas's time as editor of LBC and "a detailed knowledge of the issues that affect Londoners" would stand him in good stead.

He will report to David Mannion, editor of ITV News, who said Thomas “will bring fresh thinking allied to journalistic and producti [sic]

I gather that the Daily Mail last week said that Katie Derham is going to be the presenter of the new London news programme as Mary Nightingale had "won" the battle to be top dog on the Evening News.

Can't quite see Katie accepting being relegated to regional news somehow!

She would be presenting to a larger audience though than other regional programmes.

It still doesn't have the same cachet as presenting national news for a channel.

What would happen to people like Lucy Alexander and Anna-Marie Ashe? Would they continue to present London News? I actually prefer Katie Derham to Mary Nightingale, but Katie should stick to national news programmes as she is very good.

To be honest I prefer Katie Derham as a newsreader than Mary Nightingale, as she always sounds like she's going to cry, plus Katie and Mark make a good team on the Evening News. Though I guess this isn't the first time that a popular national reader will go to regional news, such as Alastair Stewart (ITN to LNN) and Philip Hayton (Main BBC News to North West Tonight)

Stuart is also an old Invicta Radio stalwart from Kent, where he actually started his broadcast career.
So from my reckoning, he MUST have worked alongside Glen Thompsett (ITV1 & Ex LWT continuity announcer)

They'll need others for weekends, evenings, mornings so I suspect they'll stay around.

BTW, I'm pretty sure it won't be called London News!

Is this to replace London Tonight/Today? I know i might sound dense but why? (Even though its most probably being mentioned already!)

Someone suggested in another thread that the plan was to use ITV News Channel presenters to do the short bulletins
