The ‘Goodnight’ from Alastair included a wide shot of the studio, normally reserved for after he would say Goodnight with only him in view.

A real blast from the past and, sadly, the news of the death of former News at Ten newsreader, Rory MacPherson. His son confirms his recent passing (Jan 2021) in the comments section of this clip.

Until receiving this link, I'd forgotten all about Rory. He is here, alongside Reggie B.

I believe so, Mark. In fact, someone commented along those lines in the comments section of the Youtube clip. It seems it was a Thames trademark to hit the button quickly!

It may have been a staged 'move' but it was rather messy, and you could do a more co-ordinated one than that, and still have the same effect of letting the viewer see the studio floor.
The camera on Suchet, reframes on the 'wipe' out of titles, which appears to throw John given the glance to the person sitting to his right. And if you are going to move a piece of equipment 'for show' you'd have the camera track right and reposition, or have the programme FM move the monitor out of the way. Not have three crew moving all at once, and bashing in to each other.


It became a part of the bulletin format when the EEN moved to the Newsroom.

'And now live to Libby Weiner in Downing Street' (Newscaster swings around from atrium to newsroom shot).

^ The correspondent astons (for example, at 12’46”) wouldn’t look out of place today. Especially liking the use of the ITN logo.

The end music is a pretty big clue. It seemed to me that ITN closing sequence was somewhat ponderous, but despite that they simply never got to the colour prod. Generally ITN will drop their production people credits rather than risk overrunning.

In those days, and even now, there is a gallery PA who does the ‘big sum’ and the chances of ITN not coming off air on time is very small. Very small.

They didn't cut off much though did they? The Editor credit was normally the last thing, I'm pretty sure there wasn't an 'ITN Production' caption at the end of the bulletins in those days.


I always found it curious that ITN bulletins have always had credits, but regular BBC news bulletins never have. I've never known why

I've never known why either, was it like that from the beginning of ITN?


Probably more of a mystery why the BBC don't (apart from Newsnight)?
