that is, of course, if itv are still producing local news in a few years time.

Now there's a whole new can of worms...

I once spoke to a NUJ Father of Chapel for ITV regional news in August 2004. He claimed that when the analogue licences expire for the ITV regions (2008-2012) , there will be no obligation for ITV to produce regional news.

Can anyone confirm this, have Ofcom made ruling on this point in past couple of years?

Given the nature of some of ITVplc's moves to new buildings in recent years, it does seem to point towards the eventual dropping of regional news programmes.

Think about it. Some sites are now studio-less "newsgathering centres", so are basically office buildings. Even those buildings that do have studios are little more than small office-type buildings too. And they tend to be on obscure "Business Parks" (i.e. glorified industrial estates), a long way from the city centre.

I get the impression that many of them weren't built especially for ITVplc, but were being built anyway, as part of regeneration of their respective Business Parks. And it just happens to be ITVplc, as opposed to any other company, who's moved in. ITVplc could just as easily move out again in a few years' time.

I wouldn't be surprised if, say, "Television House" in Gateshead (for example) was occupied by, say, an HSBC call-centre (or whatever), by 2015. And so on.

I notice that Central Lobby has changed to just The Lobby now, so I presume that people who receive the Oxford transmitter still get other Central regional programmes apart from Hancock's Half-Time !

Central Extra also appears to have been rather clumsily renamed as Extra Tonight (oh dear), obviously also to allow for the Oxford-transmitter area.

Presumably, if they ever drop Hancock's Half Time, and revert back to the Soccer Night format/branding, it will also be sans- Central . Of those regions currently using the Soccer Night brand, is there a consistent policy re: inclusion of regional prefix in the on-screen name?

Talking of the weather, which we were a couple of pages back, it was nice to see Carl Tyler out of retirement today doing a "guest spot" on Thames Valley (and Meridian).

And your best temperatures.....................

Same with many Beeb premises - Leeds, Hull, Brum and Norwich

Well, S h i t e l e y certainly wasn't built for Meridian or ITV.

They've just got the top floor of a standard building that nobody else seems to want any space in.

Why they had the top floor, nobody knows; it's just higher up and nearer the electrical interference from the power lines that go over the top.

The only good point to nobody else wanting space there is that parking's no problem.

Anyone actually watching Thames Valley Today/Tonight/Today (even though it's at night)?

"Scarey" Green does not improve. Looks like Wesley Smith has done a runner (although he may be on holiday I suppose).

The programme is just Meridian Newbury's programme but with a name change. Someone tell them that Meridian Tonight was badly produced, badly researched, and badly presented.

I was hoping for a massive change away from the Meridian way of doing things. Thames Valley Today/Tonight/Today (again) is a huge let-down.

Well, you could always watch London Today/Tonight/Tonight instead, as you may already do. I don't personally because there's too much of the L-word on it, but each to their own, I suppose.

TVT isn't a complete mess. Wesley Smith's extremely competent (he was back on the lunchtime bulletin today so - no - he hasn't left) and Simon Parkin makes a decent weather presenter (is he the first weatherman not to wear a tie regularly btw?). But Chris Maughan and David Reilly are no Wesley stand-ins, but are reasonable on the Sport, as is Victoria Bennett. Mary Green's bearable: she's better than she was on Meridian Tonight, although I put that down to the Wesley effect. Unlike Hannah Shellswell, who I find hugely irritating.

In the case of Meridian Tonight being "poor" - yes, I agree with you regarding the old West edition and, as has been discussed already on the South/South East thread, recently the South East edition, too. The South edition, however, is still very professional, with two of the longest-serving regional presenters on there. And, without the faux chumminess of South Today.
