It has long stuck-out to me that non-Caucasian "A team" anchors in both BBC and ITV regions are still quite rare. Ethnic diversity amongst "B team" or lower / short bulletin / occasional relief / freelancer presenters in the regions is not necessarily much wider either (I do realise that some regions may not have particularly diverse resident populations anyway, so this is not necessarily an "unrepresentative" state of affairs everywhere).
Sangeeta Bhabra (Meridian), Sameena Ali-Khan (Central), and the late Tony Morris (Granada) are the only ITV examples that readily spring to mind. Do any BBC regions have any non-Caucasian "A" anchors at all? Have I missed anyone obvious?
In some BBC/ITV regions at least, I think that even "B, C, D..." (etc) teams are also mostly/entirely white. I don't mean to imply that any discrimination is happening here, mind. They obviously can't, for example, force BAME people (or anyone else) at gunpoint to become news anchors if that's not the career that they would freely choose.
What, if any, difference this may make to how BAME viewers feel when watching the regional news, I have no idea.
No agenda here, just an observation.

Well I'm sure they'll be invited to reply but I think considering they've used a mixture of male hosts to cover for Tony in the past rather than having one regular stand in it isn't surprising they've opened it up to applications outside of Granada too.
The timing would never feel quite right in this situation really and in a way the enforced reduction to one host has given them a bit more time to come to terms with things and allow them to continue the programme respectfully. In regular times I don't think either switching to one host or continuing with replacements in Tony's chair would have felt quite right. I do think it is the right move though now to move forward and I think it is what Tony would have wanted - and it is unlikely the co-host will appear on screen until January at the earliest I'd have thought.
