Following the launch of BC1, its 24 hour local news channel for British Columbia, Shaw Media plans on launching a national news channel with a twist.
Using its existing newsrooms across the country this news channel will present local news cut-ins at the top of the hour and a continuous data feed of hyper-local headlines and community events for each market. With the ability to cover live, breaking news at the local, regional or national level, Global News 1 will be like no other service on the dial.
So essentially viewers in Toronto will get a Toronto specific cut-in at the top of the hour and see Toronto local headlines, traffic and weather scrolling on the screens continuously even after the cut-in ends and returns to the national feed, all the while viewers in Calgary and Edmonton will get a market specific feeds on their screens. (Sorta seems how the Weather Channel uses its cable headends to feed specific weather data, forecasts and warnings on screen to 1000s of markets across the US whilst the national feed plays-out.)
This will result in 12 or more specific feeds across the country. Global also plans to create newsrooms in undeserved cities like Charlottetown PEI and create partnerships with independent stations in other cities such as on St Johns NFLD.
Sounds pretty cool and different from the current all news channels that exist in Canada like CBC News Network, CTV News Channel and the existing local news channels CP24 (Toronto) and Global's BC1 (British Columbia).
Global says that the channel will use BC1 as the launching point for the network if approved by the CTRC.
