How ridiculously flat was this, it was as if they were announcing some breaking news that had just come out of the blue, not something they’d be working up to for 4 days

Leave it to the US networks to be celebratory or triumphalist.

....or Sky News' dramatic sequence even if it was weighed down by Adam Boulton's rather off-delivery of the news itself

To think the eyes of the world were also on reporters at the counts in Arizona and Georgia until the Pennsylvania update tipped everything over the edge. Now they are almost forgotten about, and can just go home to bed. The news business is a harsh game.

I'm surprised they haven't called Alaska yet even it's likely to go Republican.

There's a middle ground though, isn't there? If you weren't paying attention you might not have noticed the BBC had called it.

I wonder if they had a slightly flashier sequence planned if they were still in full-on election mode, but as things had dragged on so long they were stuck with locked-off cameras in split-screens.

Seriously, how slow, boring and dated can they be...??!!

No idea how a lot of people seem to still think BBC is better than its popular alternatives.

CNN won the election and seems to have gained a lot more popularity in the UK through this. Good job.

It's not about being triumphalist; it's about being lively and interesting, and reflecting the historic nature of what just happened.

There’s a middle ground between US bombast though and the farcically funerial announcement there though.

Frankly BBC’s coverage has been the poor relation to CNN’s coverage. CNN have been incredibly informative and watchable throughout (and grabbed the public’s imagination it seems) whereas too much of the Beeb’s election coverage has been lacking energy and slow. It was farcical BBC ‘calling’ Wisconsin a good day or so after even Sky - to the extent Jane Hill was almost apologising for how late the call was. The Beeb’s faux balance too had been on full display - other channels have been almost immediate in pointing out there’s no evidence for Trump’s claims but BBC will often blindly read out what he’s said (as if it’s reasonable) and take ages to call a spade a spade.

I mean nobody is expecting the Beeb to have county-level analysis a la CNN but to call the Beeb’s coverage disappointing and underwhelming seems fair. It’s neither been overly interesting or incredibly informative.
The only positive I guess is that they didn’t go full GMB and get the expert takes of John Barrowman and Johnny Rotten
