Oh my word, how awful does that food look on the desk. A total cliché. What next? Chris James in his pyjama's wearing a wee willie winkie hat and at the end of each bulletin he blows out a candle?

I love this idea. It's nearly as fab as a report I saw once on Midlands Today where the reporter was crouched behind a shopping trolley in Asda's carpark and ran away with it at the end.

Suzanna introduced him as possibly the campest man in britain.

Can't remember his name though.

From the fact that caption was cropped I guess each region has a copy of the GMTV caption then? What do GMTV actually output during that time? Do they still play the old theme tune and in which case, why didn't Central cut to that?

I'm not sure Central have the ability to cut back to GMTV, that would need to be done in Leeds now wouldn't it?

When Anglia didn't have their first news bully of GMTV one morning, the above caption card stayed on screen throughout with the extended GMTV music. It played for about one and a half times.

Network/GMTV London output the 'other' caption don't they, the one if the region fails to opt. As Central did opt, they had to use their own cropped caption instead.

I assumed that was the networked caption from GMTV, and that the only reason it was cropped was because it was being taken via Central News' gallery - which is 4:3.

Notice how at the end of the clip the titles start a fraction of a second before the pillarboxing disappears. My interpretation is that the caption and the titles come from GMTV, but the caption being in the opt period is coming via the local gallery. The titles start and GMTV opt everyone back in (or however it works) If Central hadn't been able to go on air at all you'd have seen the same caption, just in it's full 16:9 glory

I didn't think that ITV ran on the "network with opts" principle for local news - I thought they rant on the "presentation with contribution" principle (and thus wouldn't need or get a feed of the network?)

In other words the news gallery doesn't have direct control of the feed to the transmitters - as in the BBC model - and instead are "cut up" by the presentation area.

I was under the impression that the various local news studios fed their outputs to either London or Leeds and they cut them into circuit (especially for the pan-regional bulletins) - though for the very small sub-regions I imagine opt-out type working may make sense?

I'm pretty certain that is how Meridian now works - with the Whiteley studios cut to line in London rather than in Whiteley.

You might still see aspect ratio oddities as GMTV is full 16:9, but the ITV plc local news operations (and ITN for ITV News) is 4:3 ARCed to 14P16 - and it would depend precisely how the ARCing is implemented as to whether it was visible or not?

I may be very wrong - and some regions may be different to others?

That was my understanding too, noggin and I suspect it does work that way for the sub regions too since they would need to be backhauled for DSat anyway.

I wonder if this "sustaining feed" was actually ITV2 which simulcasts the newshour but puts up a Follows Shortly caption during the opts. Thinking about it, don't some regions when throwing to ITN put the network feed up on a studio plasma before going to the national news?

Slight tangent - given that the feed from London or Leeds does pass through the regional station on the way back to the transmitters (as witnessed when Border was flooded) presumably an engineer with a couple of U links could arrange a local opt if needed?

For example the occasion in September when BBC Plymouth lost its connectivity to the outside world but was able to opt on analogue. In such a scenario at an ITV station - given that ITV transmitters would be radiating the apology caption rather than going to RBS unless things have changed - could the region lash up an opt out and show filler material until the network feed reappeared?
