Just so so sad, a very fitting tribute as well to a man who always got the tone spot on.
Serious, authoritative and comforting in moments of grief and turmoil but not afraid to laugh during the lighter moments.
Wonderful tribute by Anna tonight, recognising his career but also reflecting the colourful character.
I don't know the guy but strangely feel upset at his passing
RIP Bob

Deeply saddened by the news of Bob's death. I started watching Sky News about 8 years ago, and I could tell that Bob was an outstanding newsreader. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Easily one of the best broadcasters in the business - Sky News was never the same after his departure.

Sad news that he's died - I had no idea he was suffering with cancer.

Very sad news indeed, quite the reassuring voice of Sky News.

I remember he did a blog on theSky News Website a few months ago.

It would appear that Bob's surname is a rather apt one for the man. RIP, Bob. He was a kinda pioneer of today's rolling news stuff.

Very, very sad news.

Bob Friend was an excellent broadcaster, and I think I started watching rolling news because of his engaging, relaxed nature. I remember feeling oddly proud that he featured in those big budget movies as the face of British TV news.

Goodbye, Bob.

It's really sad news.

Bob was always such an engaging presenter and made Sky News much more watchable than it has been of late.

Bob Friend - Obituary from the Guardian.

Some of the stories are hilarious.

Some wonderful stories and only shows that he was an absolute legend. It was he (and Michael Buerk) that truly lit the fire under me that very much got me interested in journalism.

Shame really because it seems I'm in the profession just a little too late.

the last paragraph in bob's blog is quite revealing -

"The latest examination revealed swelling at the back of my brain, so they are going to open it up and hopefully find what the problem is after analysis and come up with a solution. "

his blog was filed on 20/7/2008, it would seem to suggest that his brain tumour was fairly well advanced at the time it was discovered.

all very very sad and as others have speculated, sky news hasn't really been the same since the old days of bob, viv and alan king.
