But it's a foreign country that the World Service is neglecting it's mandate to broadcast information and news about Britain to Laughing Laughing

If those transmissions can then accidentally be picked up in Britain Cool

Except the BBC does broadcast to Ireland doesn't it? Wasn't that an outcome of the Good Friday Agreement.

As far as I know, the Good Friday Agreement is for BBC One and Two NI. The other BBC UK channels are under a commercial agreement with BBC Studios and the Irish providers.

I believe there is a provision in the GFA to allow transmissions from both broadcasters on each others terrestrial networks

Before DSO that was only taken up by TG4 on one low power transmitter near Belfast . RTE 1 & 2 are now broadcast as well but older boxes because of the codec used cannot see them

It's never been taken up by the BBC or anyone else for ROI transmitters

When they were testing Digital TV in 2006/7 they did carry BBC3 and BBC4 on their scrambled test service

ETA A few years ago when there appeared to be some movement on the situation there was opposition from the main cable company and IIRC Sky

Well, they are on a DVB-T2 mux, so any TV that is colloquially referred to as 'Freeview HD' will receive them.

The mux is on a handful of transmitters in NI, and more are being added this year.

BBC World News is already carried on cable (Virgin Media) and IPTV (Vodafone in HD) in Ireland. Presumably they take it from Astra 19.2°E or receive a fibre feed.

Technically I think it's not just the codec (h.264) but the modulation scheme (DVB-T2) that is the issue that stops SD Freeview TVs receiving the Republic services broadcasts in the North. They are broadcast on a DVB-T2 mux in h.264 (like all Freeview services - SD or HD - carried on PSB3, COM7 and COM8 DVB-T2 'Freeview HD' in the UK)

So it’s possible to show the core version to the UK then as it’s sponsorship free?

BBC World News is archived on the BBC’s internal redux service using, what seems like, a European feed (trails have Berlin time on them). It is all breakfiller, no ads however sponsorship is included - an example being The Travel show sponsored by Turkish(?) Airlines.

Which makes me wonder if there is such a thing as an entirely ‘core’ version. The sponsorship boards won’t be played out by the gallery as the sponsorship could be region-specific?

Not sure there is as on at least one occasion in the past when BBC News (24) has rebroadcast World in an emergency situation it has included the sponsorship.

The section of the Good Friday Agreement that deals with the Irish (and Ulster Scots) language states that the British government will:

“explore urgently with the relevant British authorities, and in co-operation with the Irish broadcasting authorities, the scope for achieving more widespread availability of Teilifis na Gaeilige in Northern Ireland;”

This is the only mention of broadcasting in the agreement.

There have been various memorandums of understanding issued since that agreement.

Nothing extra has been done in the south since this one, but as the BBC is available in 90% of Republic of Ireland households at this stage it's not exactly a major issue.
