I get the intention of the promo but wouldn’t it be better to focus on the positive and funny news stories and reassure viewers that the news isn’t always a misery fest

Which in the last few weeks wouldn't be true, as the national news pretty much is entirely a misery fest, they've ramped it up to another level this year. I think some bulletins should end with a slide advertising the BBC Action Line these days.

I don't know how anyone watches a full bulletin now, I certainly can't, even before COVID for the previous four years it was dominated by Brexit and/or Trump.

EDIT: Just for clarification, I mean all news, not just BBC.

At most I'll watch one a day, but more often don't bother or don't make the entire bulletin. Tend to probably watch more of the shorter weekend bulletins than the weekday ones.

Given the last year the statement about Action Line at the end of the bulletins isn't actually that far fetched - they seem to roll it out (or the equivalent on other channels) for any drama or soap now where someone might get distressed by as little as losing an eye lash, so a brief direction to areas of support after COVID heavy news bulletins is actually a surprising ommission, especially for directing people without the internet to support.

The news is grim now. I seem to nod off half-way through the BBC 10pm news, and weirdly what wakes me up is the silly sound track to the Red Screen of Death HD caption.

The news is grim now.

Turned the 10 o'clock news on last week and persuaded my girlfriend to watch for a bit as she's not keen on the news currently. After the covid coverage, it covered the suicide of a disabled person following the incorrect slashing of their income by the government, then it was a report on the holocaust. Wasn't exactly the cheeriest ending to a bulletin.

I'm not a fan of the bubblegum 'and finally' sections, but I can see why it's all too much for people at times.

Those stories are great because it shows that the world isn't all bad plus we get to see Simon McCoy's reaction to them!

What a weird promo.

It doesn’t Make me want to watch BBC News at all. It doesn’t even tell me the mission of BBC News. Just makes me want to book a holiday to Spain. It’s so dreary

I’m not sure I want the news to be ‘ on my side ’ in all honesty, nor was I worried the future was ‘cancelled’ in the first instance.

Yes, you often see American local stations going with the "on your side" strapline. I don't think it's very becoming for BBC News. Just tell me the facts and I'll decide which side, if any, I'm on.

I guess it's better than "The future's not cancelled, but a lot of our output was."

Whilst on this topic what on earth does “Bulletins Building Confidence” mean

It means "stop asking us awkward questions about how things seem to be going right now".

I mean, it’s pretty clear what the point of the advert is. You can trust us because we understand what a **** time you’re having. The news isn’t just for other people. I’m not sure a few clips of Simon McCoy grumpily introducing squirrels on waterskis is going to have quite the same cut through with the audience this advert is aimed at.

I actually like it. I think this, and the “one day” promo of last year is simply the BBC’s efforts offer hope, something it probably feels obligated to do given its status as the ‘national’ broadcaster.

The last year has been the closest most have seen the BBC operate on what I would regard as a war footing. The news has been incredibly bleak, many are struggling, often failing to see the way out of the pandemic. I see evidence of some of my social media friends struggling, for example. The promo is obviously aimed at helping the many to see that it will end.

My concern with the BBC over the last year is that they pile on the misery by highlighting the residual issues that the pandemic causes. i.e increase in domestic abuse, loneliness, food poverty. But then that is what the BBC does really well and it attempts to represent as many of the licence fee payers as possible...... it’s just it makes for very depressing viewing.

Bad news generates more coverage and views, there is nothing much the BBC can do to balance that on the main bulletins.
