As in the other thread, News at ten had been under threat for 6 years before it got the chop:

I Asked back last year about plans to get rid of ITN News at ten: http://www.tvforum.co.uk/thenewsroom/date-1993-itn-news-seven-itv-32233/ and some details appear but a book has not told the full truth. Someone wrote:

And Finally' book about ITN published in 2005, I don't recall reading anything about a 7pm bulletin, but it was as early as about 1994 that Carlton got the ball rolling for the axe of News At Ten, as they believed that in the long term ITV would be better off for having the 10-11pm slot free for new programmes and getting 'a younger audience' obviously this never happened and the NaT was probably the worst commercial mistake ITV made in recent years.

That Book for unknown reasons has completely and utter whitewash the truth and trying to bad mouth Carlton as an escape goat. plans were afoot in 1992 to get the ball rolling and it was nearly achieved in 1993.

From January 1992:

In 1993 MPS and houses of lords held discussion about ITV plans for moving News at ten, It was reported in the papers and by MPS IT Was all most done deal.

Do why did it fall through?

I can't answer your question but that's strange to see that the axing of News at Ten was planned as far back as 1992. That was the year of the single headed relaunch. If they'd gotten their way early, the world of TV news would be very different wouldn't it? Sir Trev would probably not be as well known as he became after becoming the sole presenter of NaT.

Ironically considering the ITV network was arguably in a stronger state earlier in the nineties if they had axed News at Ten earlier it might have worked out for them as I suspect they'd have had more success in commissioning the shows to fill the 10pm hour.

I do recall that the problem with the News at ten slot was that ITV would show a film that started at nine and then had a 35 minute break in it half way through....totally ruining the viewing of the film.
Despite this, it was interesting how quickly the BBC moved to change their Nine News to Ten once ITN vacated that time slot.
