A VERY simple mock of mine for which I can only take execution credit for (plus some tweaks) of how I'd implement the new national news graphics on the BBC for the regions, apologies if this is a bit too simple.

One thing I wanted to do was introduce some animating elements in places and make better use of the screen space to reinforce the brand, but nothing really worked.

Good work.

Animation etc is good, but why have you ignored safe areas? The live bug would also look better if it lined up with the aston text, as well as keeping in safe areas.

Agree with Chris' points... Also, why is the text so small?

He hasn't ignored safe areas, just 16:9 safe instead of 4:3.

No need to be picky. You know what I mean. There are still lots of people with 4:3 television sets.

Not being picky, but its 2012 I'm seeing mostly widescreen sets, why should we continue to serve an older standard?

As dbl explained for me, Chris - it's 16:9 safe but totally agree it can look jarring on first impression! I'll do one 4:3 safe for you so you can see why I went 16:9 safe, it was aesthetics originally, but the BBC are shifting to 16:9 safe as the years go on!

The live bug was the biggest point of confusion in this design - Originally as you described, it lined up perfectly with the aston text and programme legend - I then tried moving it about, and lined the location text up with the aston text and stuck with it, just to try something different!

SRS - The text is small because it was designed in HD, I didn't want it to be too big. Obviously strayed too far into the other end of the spectrum now Very Happy Will increase things 2/3pt see if it improves!

Though I totally agree with DBL's comments on 16:9 safe and moving on, 4:3 safe limits what you can fit on screen!

Jon, thanks for the comment!

Really nicely animated. But what's that slowly scrolling thing along the red bar? Is that supposed to be ticker text? Personally, I don't think the gradient on the LIVE strap works either, nor the bright, pale red on the Breaking News part. I'd agree with others about it being a bit small.

I've been looking at completing, as it were, what the graphics for BBC News might look like, as a whole, whenever the move to NBH actually happens. One thing that seems apparent to me, at least, is the inclusion of the 'bbc.co.uk/news' on the strap, which is present when we see the graphics on the Andrew Marr show, etc. I've completed a few of my 'predictions', and without hijacking...

Critique, thanks for your comments and it's not hi-jacking!

The ticker text is replacing what would be a news ticker with contact details for Midlands Today

Here's an updated version, everything is 2% larger, animation trimmed a bit and an experimental 'rich element' in the breaking news aston! Subdued the gradient in the live strap, and lined the place name with the aston text (the whole graphic lined up with the aston text looked wrong.

Better?

Much better now the 'Live' bug is more choppier.

But, red on red? At 720 and 480 (closest to 576), it's hardly readable.

Indeed, good improvements. I think the new animating pulse-thing in the Breaking News strap stands out a bit too much, though. Not quite sure what you could do to it before it's unnoticeable and thus pointless.

And yes, what I was saying earlier, is I couldn't actually read the text - I wasn't sure if there was anything there, or just my eyes!
