So
North American sports network Versus is to be rebranded as NBC Sports Network soon, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to scratch that longtime itch of mine - designing a set of idents, scorebars and graphics suitable for a modern day sports network.
So using my complete lack of talent, I decided to have a go.
First of all, I took a look at the current crop of sports net logos dominating the US broadcast landscape
Notice a theme? Most of them have "SN" as part of their acronym/initialism, and there's a lot of italics, a lot of metal, a lot of movement and a lot of colour. OK I thought. The name, "NBC Sports Network" is too clunky. It's going to have to be initialised. The Peacock is a very recognisable symbol of NBC anyway, so why have NBC in the title?
So, I present my italicised metal colourful logo for NSN.
The Peacock gives us six base colours to work with, plus the standard black/grey/white control colour. Which means graphics, such as this baseball league table, can have up to seven background colours depending on the sport. Here, baseball necessitates green; I have included the other 5 peacock tail colours on the left as an example.
This concept also applies to the ticker. Most sports networks have an in-program ticker, giving scores, news, even Fantasy stats. Again, here I've stuck to a simple metal curved theme, and I've again included other examples to illustrate how the ticker would work.
Here's how the ticker would look during a live baseball game with a generic NSN UPDATE tag. Also on this image is the standard baseball scoreboard with prominent peacock logo.
And when the ticker's gone, the DOG turns transparent, like it should.
This is another example of how graphics could be implemented. NFL is a whole different ballgame. Each match is an event in itself, being as there is less of them than baseball matches. Therefore a slightly more detailed set of graphics is required, utilising the team logos and more prominent distinctions between text and scores than on the baseball score graphic.
PS - the NSN DOG appears to be missing from this mock... accidentally... though this COULD be the NBC network feed.....
For comparison, this is NBC's current network NFL graphics package:

I plan to develop this idea a bit further. Any feedback is gratefully received. I hope to provide information on animation / logo formation soon once I've thought about it a bit more.
Mocking information: Stock images of NFL and MLB action from Google Image Search. 3D Peacock logo remains copyright of NBC. Fonts used: Never Say Die and As Seen On TV. =
