I've bought a Chromecast for £20 as part of the Black Friday sale at Currys/PC World with a 3 month Entertainment Pass, so will give that a go as well.

However I've largely purchased it for the ability to stream from Chrome to the TV.

It's a great little solution for Youtube on the telly and for web browsing on the telly. It's not ideal for iPlayer and other UK catch-up services as it does a very crude 25p to 60p conversion by repeating frames which adds quite noticeable motion judder (well it is very obvious to some of us, other people don't seem to notice or if they do don't care) It's worse than 24p content at 60p which has a more regular (though to me very annoying) 3:2 judder as alternate frames are shown for 50% longer.

I thought it'd have the motion judder issue with UK services. However, if it's better than the LG app with YouTube, which crops off parts of 4:3 video, then it'll be worth it. Still, the three month pass can be used with my LG NOW TV app, it's not a complete waste of money.

A lot of unhappy users today, seems that the Playout systems for NOW TV and SKY GO aren't working properly. Many Rugby customers going a little spare on the customer forums.

If only there was some means of delivering TV programmes, from some sort of network of tall steel towers, each covering a area about 50 miles across, or better still from something really high up in the sky, that almost every dwelling could point a device at, to capture the signal ?

Would never catch on though... Why would everyone want to watch the same thing at the same time?

Ideally pay tv would use the DTT spectrum, but as we've seen with On/ITV Digital and Top Up TV, it's not that easy to monitise from using the terrestrial platform.

Ha, yes !! Though to be a bit more serious, who watches 'big ticket' sport and other events time-shifted ?
Either live or not at all ? It does highlight the most appropriate method to deliver live events, is to still use 20th century broadcasting methods, rather than point to point 'ip' multi-streaming ?

I'd be interested to see ratings for 'live' sport shown on ITV +1 etc...

Absolutely.

Also with streaming IP stuff broadcasters pay per bit served - so it gets more expensive the more people watch. Broadcasting is audience agnostic in cost terms...

The same can be said for big entertainment premieres such as Game of Thrones which NOW TV also had problems maintaining capacity when they streamed it on Sky Atlantic.

Interesting that Sky have renewed their reduced rates for the Sports passes of £6.99/day and £10.99/week until at least early March 2015. Originally these were due to increase at the end of this month (Nov 2014).

That's a much better pricing strategy to be honest - and I'm sure more people will take them up on it at those prices. £9.99 a day was just silly money to be honest.
