(This I admit is stretching the forum title and remit but nevertheless is interesting)

The way music is broadcast seems to change daily, but it’s usually a case of more music being made available in more different ways. Now, though, the reverse is happening. The BBC has told its producers and DJs not to play music by Neil Young, the Doors, Journey or Bonnie Raitt – or any cover versions of their songs, or tracks sampling them.

Yes - there is a composer vs performer issue at the moment. Some composers are no longer covered by the BBC blanket agreement. That e-mail went around a couple of weeks ago though...

AIUI MCPS covers composition and PRS covers performance (might be wrong). The BBC have agreements with both which covers most - but not all - composers and performers. However as some composers have withdrawn from the MCPS they aren't covered by the pre-existing BBC agreements.

Until recently it has been possible to use a BBC system called 'Fast Clear' to check whether music can be used on-air. Now you have to additionally check a list of composers...

Or :

1. The BBC are about to get a large bill...
2. The BBC have arranged a deal for some radio play but not under the blanket agreement (which means that TV and other uses may still be problematic?)
