It just looks absolutely awful.
Hate *everything* about it. Hate the graphics, hate the bar, hate the fact that they'll have members of the public - hate the fact that this is *instead of* proper news. Fine for BBC Two, but it shouldn't be anywhere near BBC News. It's entertainment.
You may already have seen it but here's a behind the scenes of the Victoria Derbyshire studio ahead of the programme's launch

Surely the biggest controversy in that video is that the editor hasn't got a red lanyard

This show does NOT belong on the NC. For BBC Two it's fine... but the NC should be a rolling news channel... not Kilroy reinvented.

Brekkie also made an excellent point about the show being in the wrong slot. They could just about get away with it if it was on after 7pm.
I only hope when there is a big breaking news story, the NC can either opt-out alone or simulcast with World, leaving Ms Derbyshire to talk to members of the public or interview a guest about some tedious human interest story on BBC Two only.

I'll reserve full judgement until I've seen how it works on screen, I like the idea of it but I agree it isn't the right time of the day. Personally, with this new show, business live and simulcasting of world news today I believe it's watering the news channel down and is clear cost cutting. Also, isn't outside source in the news channel now. Or coming to it? Anyway, when I've seen it I don't mind it but I also think it's far too gimmicky.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how this works and I can understand why the BBC are moving in this direction. News is now available all the time in a number of places and so the NC needs to offer something more, be that analysis or breaking its own stories. To my mind. If you're spending millions on something I'd like to see more variety rather than hour after hour of the same thing.
The show could go either way and I'm sure it'll develop over time, but if it focuses on the news and explains stories and breaks stories then I think it's exactly what the BBC should be doing.

From the BBC News Channel's service licence.
Quote:
It should offer a comprehensive news service each hour, including sport, and clear,
comprehensive weather updates from across the UK. There should be a news
summary on the half hour.
BBC News Channel should aim to deliver breaking news first and, wherever possible,
immediately but not to the detriment of accuracy. In the event of significant breaking
news, BBC News Channel may also be broadcast on BBC One or BBC Two.

Given you haven't seen the programme yet, how do you know there won't be updates of news, sport and weather?
It's not all discussion based...

Instead of rolling your eyes, I refereed to the service licence as reference for what the VD team HAVE to do during the show in addition to the other non rolling news output.
We already know that Carol Kirkwood will be doing weather for VD in addition to Breakfast. Sport will be interesting though to see if they can squeeze that in among the female skewed topics.
