Yeah, I think I know which is my favourite. The balloon era and the 1991-1997 idents captured a magical atmosphere of Christmas in imaginative ways. The dancers era? Stick a bunch of kids in costumes on different backgrounds. Yeah. Then use them into the news of the tsunami on Boxing Day 2004... I do realise that particular ident was designed by a Blue Peter viewer, but it's just they never felt as a well-produced as what we'd had from 2001 and before.
So is it just me or was everything better with the balloons?
1997 and 1998 weren't even based on the balloons. The image you've chosen from 97 just looks circular (a pear tree, one of many executions that year) and 98 was a giant bauble. The main issue with the dancers years is perhaps they stuck too closely to the brief - and in any case, a load of cute kids at Christmas always seemed to bring out the "ahhh" factor with anyone I was watching with.
So I notice the ease out of focus start has been removed from the news/"serious" ident, which isn't a bad idea but it has resulted in a nasty crash into the music each time it is played out.
NI have got it spot on. Has someone posted it yet, I'll chuck up a recording if not?

No it hasn't been posted yet. Would like to see it.
Also, a dancing paper turkey to whoever can decode the following caption which popped up prior to a BBC2 Scotland ident at 6.30 t'other night... I'll go for: Scotland, 2nd junction, something to do with time, 15sec.
Incidentally, are all BBC2 Scotland junctions pre-recorded?
I wouldn't have thought any were with the announcer also being the director. Although I guess for particularly complex junctions they might occasionally record the announcer so they can concentrate on pressing the right button and cueing the next programme at the right time.
