What did the announcer add that we didn't already know from what was on screen?

Try considering the blind.

Wouldn't the blind have AD on anyway? Plus, I think the occasional announcement would still be fulfilling for them. Blind people may easily become tired of frequent "something is wrong and we're trying to fix it" announcements.

What's your point there? The only thing I can think of is that you're suggesting the announcements should only be carried on the AD stream.

Blind people don't need an announcement more than every 40 seconds, just the same as everybody else.

I don't dispute that - it's just that the OP wrote that the on-screen caption was enough implying no need for an announcement.

Not at all. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but not being blind, I don't use AD so I don't know if live programmes carry live AD, let alone AD at all, but if it was live wouldn't they be able to tell viewers something was wrong with the programme?

I do see a point in repetitive announcements as it's a sort of "wait wait, it's alright, we've got it, just give us a minute, we're just sorting it now" practice, as it lets the average viewer know work is being done to sort the problem. But compare it to the Generation Game clip, I'd prefer the old practice.

What about partially sighted people, who perhaps are unable to read text on a screen?

I don't think anybody is saying there shouldn't be occasional announcements, just not as frequent as in some recent examples.

It's a bit like the insincere "your call is important to us" announcements you get while on hold which make being on hold even more annoying.

I hope the mods don't think this is spam but this is the last day ( or even tomorrow) to vote in the national tv awards

For those of you that get excited by such things:-

I caught a tiny snippet of BBC Breakfast at 07:30 this morning. There was mention that the presenters (Bill T, Sian W and Chris H) had spent yesterday filming in fake snow for 'something for BBC 1'. It seems Mr Hollins said a bit too much about it, by the reaction of the other two.

Christmas Idents perhaps ?

Hmmm, interesting....

The word is (on a Digital Spy forum) that there is to be no new christmas ident for bbc1 this year, apparently they are planning to re-use the 2010 one (Rooftops) alongside a third airing for 2006's Snowball Ident.

Is there anyone on this forum "in the know" about whether there actually WILL be a new festive ident for bbc1 in 2011 after all?

On the other hand it's probably more likely to have been either a promo for the Christmas line-up or a programme to be shown over Christmas
