Five is a brand

The 2002 logo wasn't that bad, actually (March 2021)

I have a feeling this might be an unpopular view, but I quite like the 2002 Five logo. It popped up on screen the other day and looked quite modern and crisp. I'm a bit of a sucker for that sans-serif, typographic, Helvetica Designers Republic aesthetic, even though the idents were dull. At least it wasn't trying to look like a poor man's Channel 4 (although that may have been more fitting).

That might be my last post on this forum... once again, cheers folks.

It's a lot better than the Richard Desmond 5 logo.

I liked it. But I loved the 2006-2008 idents

I generally hate “people” idents, but there was something about the ever-expanding set of idents used in this era I really liked.

I also liked their promos that featured words on the screen rather than a voiceover.

Same. I still am not happy when Desmond ridiculed the name on his decision to rebrand the channel back to Channel 5. Five was a way better name than Channel 5 since the latter name gave you the impression that it was a sister channel of Channel 4.

I did like the original [(5)] logo. Though looking back now it has dated a little.

'five' as a brand was not one I particularly liked. Didn't like the positioning of the channel, Didn't like the logo, the way it animated on screen, the pallette for the break-flashes and found the idents lazy.

The biggest crime of that era was what they did to 'five news'. Any of the programmes remaining 'edge' was unceremoniously taken out back and dealt with - the remnants being a snore-fest.

The 'FIVE' era that followed 'five', on the other hand, was excellent. Great set of idents, brilliantly created and purpose put back into the schedule with clear positioning.

Shame the aforementioned Richard Desmond wrecked that work and gave the channel a brand that was so poor that they had to malform the logo in print in order to shoe-horn in the word 'CHANNEL'. That era can be summed up as simply, 'ew'.

The current Channel 5 is better - but the channel just seems to get lost in the EPG.

If I were Viacom, I'd either re-brand the channel as 'CBS' or put the Paramount Network branding on the carcass of Channel 5.

Channel 5/Five is a much stronger brand in the UK than CBS, possibly even Paramount in the context of television.

Yeah, CBS is a digital brand in this country, so they can't use it anyway. If they rebranded the Channel 5 channels as CBS, then people would expect the existing CBS channels to be on whatever they rebrand My5 to. But those channels are actually part-owned by another company.

It would make no sense to rebrand Channel 5 as CBS, the 5 brand is much stronger now anyway.

The "five" era was the most successful in terms of ratings. The channel's market share exceeded 6% for the first time and performed strongly throughout.

This one, to me, is the greatest ident C5 ever had. I also had a lot of time for the five era, with the exception of the changes to news.

Wasn't that originally a CSI promo used in the states with the five logo pasted on top? Very effective though.
