Phil implied this morning they always have two back ups but this is the first time both have been used.

Dancing on Ice is very lucky they had backup to come in at short notice.

They’re contracted from the start and are training in parallel with the announced couples. So it’s not luck, it’s basically an understudy system - they couldn’t bring someone in cold at this stage due to the safety necessity of basic skate training before they start on choreographed dances. I don’t know how many there are though, I’m sure in the past I’ve read it’s one male and one female cover?

I believe Strictly have a similar system in place, though the pre competition training aspect isn’t as important there.

I wouldn't be surprised if DOI's being more injury prone makes a two person backup a necessity whereas Strictly would have to be extremely unlucky to have two people pull out before the show had started properly.

Billie Shepherd has left Dancing On Ice after a fall left her concussed. She will not be replaced as both reserves have been put in place.

DOI is not doing well with injuries this year.

Starting to come across more dangerous than The Jump.

Wow, series 13 really is the unlucky one!

To be fair, one of the three withdrawals was because of a positive COVID test, not an injury.

But of a waste of time to have him join in only to be eliminated after one performance.

Dancing On Ice has definitely become a shadow of its former self this year more than ever. Whoever is making these poor decisions isn’t helping the shows cause at all. They really should’ve given Matt a free pass to next week. It’s frankly embarrassing watching the whole thing every Sunday now, it’s all so cheap and nasty!

I do wonder if the FA Cup contract seeing the show potentially interupted every third Sunday next year might force their hand - it really isn't firing at all anymore. That said though ratings are up on last year, unsurprisingly perhaps, and still well above where they were when it wasn't on air.

It just needs a good kick up the arse - I think most issues can be solved by looking at what worked in the original incarnation and what doesn't now. Strictly feels loved and as if all those involved put maximum effort in - with this it feels almost the opposite and they just do what is required to get it on air.

As for Matt - they couldn't win either way really. If they'd had him skate tonight and not be up for the vote entering the competition on week 4 that would have been deemed unfair as well. Ultimately if the public really wanted him to get a bye they were able to vote him through.

True. But then you’ve got someone who is skating as if it’s their “week 1” vs everyone else who is on their 3rd public vote.

It was probably the wrong decision to even replace Rufus, but I wonder if they wanted to keep the numbers up incase there’s another Covid related withdrawal.

It would have been much fairer to have Matt debut in the same week as Amy and have Rufus withdraw a week earlier.
