Sorry to make a single thread about this (it's been a while...)

But I've noticed they've refreshed the endboards for iPlayer. Using a variant of Reith (previously Gill Sans) and the now all pink BBC iPlayer logo

Someone needs to tell the BBC that there's such a thing as too much "pink" (idk, it's a bit dark). Oh, and that dark pink on black does NOT work well AT ALL.

That pink iPlayer logo is awful. The BBC blocks need to be in white.

Ideally, they should come up with another colour altogether, since Three is pink too

The six-syllable "BBC iPlayer" name is - and always has been - too long. It inevitably ends up getting shortened to just "iPlayer" by most people, most of the time. The all-important bit that mentions whose catch-up platform it is (i.e. the BBC's) being rendered as easily expendable in this way, is the opposite of what any brand sets out to achieve.

Names like "ITV Hub", "All 4" and "My5" are perfect. By having only a single syllable besides the broadcaster name, it compels the broadcaster name element to be mentioned. Nodoby's going to be saying "I'll catch it later, on Hub/All/My" like they'd say "I'll catch it later, on iPlayer". In the case of "(the) Hub" it still kind of works, but with "All" or "My" it sounds like an incomplete sentence.

I would strongly advocate renaming to a four-syllable name that compels the "BBC" bit to not get dropped. The possibilities are endless: "BBC Play/Now/Go/Live/Plus..." (etc)

This is why BBC News 24 became “the BBC News channel”. Thanks, I hate it.

BBC3 is just a sub-brand of the iPlayer though nowadays. It isn't a problem, just as BBC1 and BBC News sharing a red colour scheme isn't a problem either.

A little bit more info on this rebrand in the thread from a few weeks back:

I've alwasy thought as they now have BBC Sounds which has radio stations, catch up, podcasts and othe sound bites they don't re-brand iplayer to BBC Vision. It could become a rich resource with TV channels, catch up video podcasts, news elements etc.

They could then use promote BBC Sound and Vision

I think BBC iPlayer is just too strong a brand to ditch. To rebrand that would end up being a sketch akin to W1A.

I'd rather BBC One had a rebrand of idents and surrounding presentation over BBC iPlayer.

We’re told this often—including in connection with BBC News branding, as trivialmatters says—but I see little evidence of it in the real world.

Many brands would give their right arm to have an easily recognised sub-brand which people still closely associate with the parent. Look at Kindle, Clubcard, Alexa, Gmail, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Diet Coke, etc etc etc: all mega-successful brands in their own right which are immediately associated with the parent brand, reinforcing its dominance without even having to mention it.

Renaming Kindle “Amazon Reads” wouldn’t improve the product image or the Amazon brand, just as renaming “iPlayer” as “BBC Play” wouldn’t really help either.
