It’s heartwarming to see all this nepotism over the decades

Not entirely sure you know what nepotism means...

Yes, I think he started at BBC Wales. For a very short period he was also one of Radio 4's Today presenters

I was thinking... for us completists out there... does anyone want to see the figures for weekend bulletins and bbc two news programmes?
Quite enjoying this bit of research... tempting to even look at numbers for the listed weather forecasters and other programmes with a pool of presenters like Grandstand?

I may have to think of a new title for the thread. 😉

Weekend bulletins would be interesting to see. I've already done the 2010s obvs but unfortunately I no longer have the capacity to count any more decades...so will leave it in your capable hands.

So is Huw Edwards the person who has read the most BBC News bulletins?

Michael Aspel was a newsreader for nearly a decade - he famously announced the death of Marilyn Monroe on the BBC - and that was back in 1962.

Well he’s now been a consistent face on the BBC News for 21 years and an occasional relief for 5 years before that so he must be or very close. I can’t think of any other BBC News presenter in history who has served as long as he has as a news anchor.

You could say Sophie Raworth if you include Breakfast.

He did Monday to Thursday between 99 and 19, is there anyone else who did that consistently before him?

I don't think there is. So he probably is the person who's read the most.

If we refer to main news bulletins, then Huw probably does lead the pack.

If we are talking about any news bulletin, I’d guess that BIG MOIRA would still lead in terms of number of bulletins presented.

Back in the day, Moira would present up to six/seven/eight bulletins a day, albeit those could either be short daytime summaries combined with the Six on the same day, or insert bulletins (‘inserts’ being news bulletins during Breakfast, On the Record, Breakfast with Frost/Sissons, etc, etc). But all news bulletins nevertheless.

Also, Moira would have presented weekly news programmes such as News Review and, latterly, NewsView.

So, if we were to tally the total number of news bulletins regardless of the bulletin’s duration, I think Moira could well be the leader.

However, Huw did Rolling News on both N24/Channel, whereas Moira didn’t. How would you measure a 2 hour slot on the channel? A single bulletin, four half hour bulletins or two one hour bulletins?

Moira’s length of service at BBC News was continuously from 1981 to 2007. (26 years in total).
