Speaking as a nancy boy and a pansy myself, I understand that people may not approve of these terms but I don't support the removal/editing of content which includes them. Context is everything. Hearing a character in a sitcom referring to someone as a pansy is one thing. Hearing Huw Edwards referring to the people at a gay pride parade as such in a news bulletin would be a different story.

Agree - though the thought of Huw Edwards reporting in such a way is funnier than anything a sitcom could possibly deliver, largely because it is so absurd. I think that is also largely the argument in defence of not removing some of these shows from the archives - "absurd" is probably the best way to describe the Bo Selecta characters for example.

I’m a bit conflicted on Bo Selecta because on the one hand, the characteristics are nothing like the actual person but on the other hand, you can see why some would get offended or be problematic.

I noticed that Trisha Goddard seems to have jumped on the bandwagon, no official complaint recorded at the time but now it caused so much hurt and pain?

The depiction of her is probably the most racist of any of the examples mentioned.

I don't see anything ironic about that.

Have to say too I very much enjoyed the Jason Manford comedy gig that BBC aired on Friday night but given the whole furore and worries about offensive material I've surprised it aired. Clearly slipped under the nose of the BBC controllers especially given the comedy cull there was last week.

None of it was offensive really but there were certainly bits which I enjoyed but I could imagine curtain-twitchers getting very upset about. That said as a show that was recorded a few years ago there were quite a few bits of it that had aged very well for the current situation we're all living through (the bit about the queue in particular).

Indeed, I'm surprised it wasn't pulled even though the gags were showing how sometimes you accidentally cause offence, rather than causing offense

The gag about queuing at a cash point, both the accidental racist bit and the 2m apart bit, the factually correct pirates, and the bit about the centre being forgotten due to the loud left and right voices, were all particularly topical.

Visited HMV today for the first time in years, and they had at least 3 boxsets of Little Britain.

No over inflated price rise,
no jostling in the aisles to get a copy,
no hiding it away instore, on full display right at the front of the store,
no 'evils' from the cashier for buying a 'unacceptable product' or judgement passed.

I don't see anything ironic about that.

Bo' Selecta! had a racist, blackface impression of her against her will that led directly to the harassment of her children. Little Britain had blackface in different segments of the series. It's a bit of a tenuous link.

Ok, I accept that it's a little tenuous but she still accepted a gig to go on a show that had blackface on it. She also didn't mind pretending to host a show which takes a good poke at the working class white folk, 'white trash' as he has said in the past.

One of the UKTV Play episodes of The Bill I watched a few days ago had the "n" word in which suprised me, though there was a content warning before the start and a 15 rating. It was in context, with a prisoner talking about the abuse he gets rather than just spoken casually like with the major in Fawlty Towers, but I admit I'm suprised it went out in a pre-watershed show in 1989, no way would that happen now. Would probably be quite hard to get it in a post-watershed show these days, even in that context.

I know the episode you speak of, I was surprised too, just a heads up look for other terms in a few episodes time ^hint a term I use to say to go to a corner shop.... but I did wonder the same regarding pre-watershed of words at a guess it must have been acceptable (at the time), as if you look at programmes of that time ie Spitting Image (Naked Video on BBC Scotland not sure if this was shown UK wide)
