The trouble is the 9 lower thirds are great for a controlled one off bulletin but I think you’d soon run into problems using the no background design across the whole BBC News operation.

I'm not sure there are problems - these things always take a while to thoroughly test. European elections, Brexit votes and the search for a new Prime Minister have all kept designers and directors busier than they might have expected to have been a few months ago.

I can’t help but feel we are going to be very disappointed, it seems inconsistent the nine has very good lower thirds, but those graphics on the one minute world news summary seems very different, Victoria derbyshires graphics aren’t exactly brilliant either with the text looking squished at times.

It is disappointing how different these three things seem to be. Those who've seen the News Channel graphics say they're good though, and while what we've seen on the one minute summary isn't earth shattering, it does at least look neat and consistent. I agree that the Nine graphics look amazing but perhaps wouldn't work on the NC, while the VD graphics are just vile.
harshy, Ittr and Jon gave kudos

I find it ironic that the font is named after the organisation's founder, yet they can't seem to honor his legacy by just implementing it with no hassle at all.

Explain why is it ironic?

I’m sure Lord Reith wouldn’t want it to be rushed out at extra cost and expense than rolling it out as needed.

Yet it takes mear seconds to figure out how to fix that and shouldn't take too long to implement it.

The BBC have also never been too concerned about relaunching things in one go previously either - the 1999 look was phased in over two years or so across network, world, regions and News 24, and similarly later changes such as the move to Broadcasting House didn't happen all on one day, though of course ITV managed perfectly fine to relocate four different live TV shows on a a single day!

Seeing as people are talking about whether or not The Nine's design could or couldn't work on the NC (and elsewhere), I might as well link a few videos I've been working on for The Gallery, so you can get a sense of what it would like like if they did adopt a similar style...

I think the main problem you'd have with using The Nine style graphics, which has been pointed out, is the having no background... apart from the shadow so that the text doesn't clash on light backgrounds (I purposely made the shadow darker).

I suppose it’s similar to any public owned business against a private, private businesses usually seem to be able to roll out processes effectively, but I suppose they also don’t have the tax payers moaning about wasted money either.

They’re wonderful, many congratulations on the detail that you have gone to and the way that you have been able to adapt the elements of the nine package to create individual looks for programmes and strands that are linked.

it’s a shame that we’ll all be disappointed when something much less impressive ends up on the screen.

Wow - absolutely love these. Would love to see you do a News Channel version, not just the countdown.

If those vids are supposed to convince me it wouldn't work then you've completely failed.

Thanks fanoftv, Moz and Brekkie

I won't deviate too much (well... I'll try not to)... I don't want to turn this into a mock thread.

I am making more videos, basically one for almost all NC, BBC One and BBC Two shows, I'll put those in a Gallery thread when they're all done, most of the captures I took are from the same day so they should keep another level of consistency. But if you want to see what the NC would look like then just look at the Sportsday vid... it basically has most of the main graphics, just with some recoloured to sport yellow.

Now... back to Reith

These are great! The only niggle I have is with the on-screen clock within the straps, it's a bit too small, I know we've gone HD but if someone was watching on their phone, you'd probably have to squint.
