That still was seen quite a lot in 1988-89, as was a still of the previous ident between Jan-Sep 1988. Tyne Tees often used it into network programmes, with or without an announcement. I assume they considered it the cleanest way to join a programme without a frontcap, or with an unseen frontcap. Occasionally you heard the end of a Thames or YTV fanfare as Tyne Tees showed this still.

Wait so that still ident was used from Jan 1988? before the moving version appeared on 5 September 1988?

No, that ident was introduced in September 1988. The previous ident was used prior to that. My point was that stills were used from Jan 1988 to introduce programmes - there's nothing unusual about this footage in that respect.

The networked cake production animation started in 1988 and lasted for around 12 months when it was decided by the network that only static prod caps were to be used. The Central presentation caption for acquired programming was replaced with a Central cake end ident.

* Hearts Nov 8th 1999 - Oct. 28th 2002

There were two "Granada in the North West" variants for regional programmes.
The 1990 version had its own form up and tune and this continued to be used when the blue ident came in.
When the newer white ident came, a matching North West variant arrived as well, but apart from the wording, the ident was
the same as the standard one. The flags, I'm not sure on when they came and went but am certain they didn't totally replace the standard stripe ident.

The 1995 one is correct, I believe. There were two variants. The normal one and one shot at an angle. The angle one didn't last long and probably
went when the first 'weird' idents arrived. As more of these idents were introduced, the normal ident was seen less, mainly before news and serious programmes.
However, its usage increased slightly once Yorkshire took over transmission in 1998, as it was the lazy option for joint continuity.

Scottish Television
From 1957, the ident was a lion rampant with the word Scottish (in caps and lower case) above and Television below. By 1960 - this was replaced by the 'quadrant' logo with four black squares separated by a thin centre cross. the letters S, T, V, in three boxes and the lion rampant in the fourth.

# 1965-1970- With thanks to Mr STV himself Wink
An animated spinning lion (inside a box) made his debut in 1965 by Francis essex who took over as Controller of programmes: Athough this was later modified as a simple zoom in following, according to some reports, a complaint from The Lord Lyon King of Arms, the man in charge of protecting Scotland's heraldry
When colour began the lion continued to zoom but in pale blue. The lion rampant appeared in white on a black TV-Screen-shaped box at the top, a black band appeared with the words SCOTTISH TELEVISION in a bold condensed font in white on black centre screen, and Channel 10 in white on grey at the bottom. However this meant always having a telecine machine available for use at station opening. When the openings were 12:55 and 16:55 this was relatively simple but as startup got earlier, it wasn't economic to bring an operator in on a special shift just to run a 15" animation, so that was paermanently dispensed with and a still slide used instead. The 3D animation was never used at startup, as it came off VT and would have tied up a machine/operator.

1970-1985
After the start of colour broadcasting, the lion rampant symbol was replaced within a year by a stylised 'STV' logo, which during its 15 year rein:
# 1970-1974: Zomming STV:
# 1974- 78. The ident was revised to from a tartan pattern.
# 1978: The Static version appeared
# 1980.c: until Aug 1985. Slide of STV. A few slides of STV building.
# 1982.c - until Aug 1985: Animated cylindrical STV symbol. The ident came off a VT Cart and if the commercial break failed due to a compressed air failure on the VT cart machine (which wasn’t uncommon) then the ident failed as well. STV continued to also use slides as these were reliable.

ITV as its self:

Heart pacakge: 5th Ocotber 1998 Hearts Era THANKS TO MR KITE

GMG North (Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees) - used both NPU promos and the heart break bumper from launch day. However, promos for regional programmes remained
locally branded and often of a totally different design, which varied periodically and often between regions too. They all also took the idents when they
finally arrived. Some GMG North hearts idents had a piano variant of the tune, which where rare or non-existent in the rest of the country at the time.
There was also
* The standard form up 'lines' version
* plus a 'hold' version unique to GMG North where the ident was already formed and the music started from about 20- 30 seconds into the tune.
* There was also a light brown/yellow standard form up 'lines' version used for day time use.
* Once the rebrand to ITV1 the live shots were killed off.

Border - adopted the heart break bumper and NPU promos. Introduced the hearts idents when they arrived but seemed to use the lines one most or all of the time. In contrast to GMG North, they often used a menu with the evening's schedule on a hearts background, before leading into the immediate programme with an ident. Once GMG North took over continuity, they fell in line with GMG North's other regions.

LWT - As with GMG North, until the replaced the hearts with video wall idents.

HTV West - being owned by UNM and run from Meridian, it's story will be broadly similar to Meridian and Anglia, until Carlton took over, which further adds to the mystery, as this would've been a strange set up.

Anglia and Meridian - Used the NPU promos but stuck local logos on the top left of the end board. Basically, as the promo ran, there would be an ITV logo in the top left of the screen. However, on the final end board with the still of the programme and the information of when it was one, the ITV logo would be on another part of the screen and the Meridian or Anglia logo
was be where the ITV logo was in the top left. These stations initially ignored the heart break bumper and continued to use their own. However, when the hearts idents arrived, they introduced regionalised versions of the hearts break bumpers which also included their own names and station logos. Anglia and Meridian tended to use the lines version a lot more th

Tyne Tees continued to use the static version of whatever ident they were using at the time from January 1988 through to March 1996.

Of course the one shown in the clip above was digitally-generated; prior to January 1989, the still was an optical slide, which had a tendency to render the grey/yellow background of the 1988 ident a dirty orange colour which wasn't especially pleasant. You'll also note that the above clip's still ident was not taken directly from the ident, which actually looks quite different. The 1989 ITV Tyne Tees ident was similar, where the ITV logo was rendered flat white rather than the metallic silver of the ident itself.

Just further to the above a little bit, the 1988 rebrand at Tyne Tees was a bit of a mess in all honesty. Really they should have waited until the technical refresh in presentation had completed before going to the new ident -- instead they continued with the older early-80s equipment for a few months.

This meant that the holding slides continued with the old (optical) design for a few months, with the yellow TTTV logo. Not particularly the end of the world, but they did the same with everything else initially as well.

So the IVC background had the same problem as the ident still in that it was supposed to be "sandy" but ended up orange. This background only lasted a few weeks and was replaced with a more plain backdrop which was even more orange than the previous one, presumably to match up with the ident still.

Then you had the clock and programme menu graphics. Both were yellow-on-blue and worked well with the previous look. But both were older technology and could only render solid background colour. Both continued with the yellow-on-blue scheme for several weeks, until they were updated. The programme menu (which was computer generated) changed to a bright yellow background with a cyan-coloured logo which didn't really match anything else. The clock was worse -- a cyan-coloured logo on a dark beige-coloured electronic background.

The whole thing was obviously rushed out by a company that realised the old ident was starting to look out of place next to other companies' efforts, but failed to put in the required investment at the same time and ended up looking silly. It took months (until Christmas 1988 in fact) for the station to sort itself out, update and look reasonably up-to-date.

Actually a bit curious about that last one. I have a family home video sitting around which previously had been used for stuff recorded from STV. Before the video camera stuff starts, you see a quick flash of that last ident. The home video stuff was filmed in September 1989.

623058, you mentioned Border's logo used prior to the 1989 look. Weren't there two slides, one showing the word 'colour' and one without. In the colour era, were these used interchangeably, or did the one without the word 'colour' replace the other one?
