Anglia showed a regional ident before one of its shows yesterday. It featured Philip Schofield sat on the blue/yellow-blocks stage. But unlike the old regional idents, where we cut to a split screen at the end with an already formed up logo, this one had the same shot of Schofield, then split screen came up, the blocks moved together to form ITV1 with Anglia added underneath.
But the most odd thing about it was the ITV1/Anglia logo was on the right-hand side, whereas normally in the regional idents, the logo appears on the left.
Also on the Saturday night trailers the time of the shows is written in white usually on a dark yellow background. But this now changes from dark to light yellow, meaning you can hardly read what it says!
Well the refresh has certainly been an improvement.
The graphic tweaks are much improved, much more powerful and reflect the better Sport idents/frontcaps.
The idents themselves are much improved again, the sets and the actual celebs.
However the celebs are still quite awkward. They would have been better off putting a little more money in the graphics and dropping the celeb idents all together. ...Then again they would be better off reverting back to Carlton's, albeit with Central reinstated...
PS Philip Scholfield appears on the regional Westcountry idents as he is from the South West not East Anglia
Phil was on Granada thursday, 2:30.
All the regional Idents have the same celebs now I think as I have seen Mel on Granada, Carlton and Meridian, Chris Tarrent on Carlton and Meridian etc etc.
Well I might as well throw my opinion in now.
The celeb idents: The new sets are much better than the old, but they are still not great idents in my opinion.
The animated idents: EEEK. It makes me cringe every time I hear it. The music tries to be grand and spectacular but ends up tacky, the dull boring animation just makes it worse. True, stills look good, but the way it animates is just a bit naff. The old animated idents were loads better than these, though the short version isn't quite as bad.
The trailer endboards: These do look good, an improvemnet on the old style, cant help thinking that the text is a bit small though.
ECP: Looks alright, but I prefered the old one.
Speaking of which, there was a wierd thing on Wednesday (I think, may have been Thursday), I was flicking through the channels when I came across ITV1, with an Granada purpole endcap up with ano over the top (just the end of it). It then switched to a bizzare version of the ECP, full screen. Where the credits usually sre was a blank version of the bity with the menu on and the 4 boxes underneath, the menu was in the usual place and also had the four boxes underneath, so eight boxes in total. This was acompnied by an anouncement over the top telling us whats comming up. Just wounder why they didn't use a next slide or whatever, it did look wierd.
Also could someone please explain what makes the animated idents generic but the celeb idents not as everoner seems to refer to the animated idenbts as generic idents? Maybe I've just got a confused idea of what 'generic ident' means.
Whilst literally, the term 'generic ident' doesn't fit in with what it does, but my understanding was they are idents which usually just show the channel logo etc. compared to the main idents, in ITV1's case celebs.
I agree with you there Ashley on the animated idents being rubbish. They really make me cringe. What I would have done is to make ITV1 look more like ITV2, that would have been better.

Correct. Officially known as 'graphic' idents but dubbed on here since day one (and I've always been guilty of using the term) as 'generic' idents.
The definition of the term as always used on this and other fora until October 28th 2002 was that a "generic" ident referred to one branded as "ITV1" rather than "[region]".
Generic meaning "generic to the network" as opposed to "specific to the region".
Where ITV idents are concerned, that's the
correct
usage of the term "generic", hence idents and graphics used by ITV1 now except when introducing regional news are ALL generic. There's very little NON-generic left on ITV1 now.
