Here's, I hope, a comprehensive rundown of UTV ident history, with images from The TV Room and TV Live and video from StevieB:

Ident 1 (oscilloscope with dots) - 31st October 1959 to c. 1970? - possibly multiple still variants existed

Ident 2 (yellow oscilloscope in TV shape on blue background) - c. 1970? to c. 1988 - perhaps introduced with the launch of colour on 14th September 1970 (unconfirmed) with monochrome version also used; used in tandem with the "telly on a stick", later variations possibly electronically-generated?

* first Ident January 1, 1993 shortly after midnight.
* Second ident started on 4th September 1995
* Third Ident started on Monday 25th November 1996

Are you sure about that? I seem to remember the first set of idents didn't even last until the end of 1993

The originals had a shadowed background (plant, fan, blinds etc). The second batch were different (no 'London' and they didn't speak) and used a mottled background along with one they used a lot which was a montage of several

I'll change it to say by autumn 93 there were revised to no longer have London or anyone spoke.

Please note, not all the dents were montages some were single straight Idents even up until summer1995.

Yes, I can confirm that 'straight' ones were being used in Oct 1994.

BTW - hated that ITV Day/UTV Day brand - not even good grammar, in my opinion, innit?

I know at the time ITV wanted to reinforce its investment int daytime, but ITV Day as was awful, just glad it was shortlived. At a time when they were trying to reinforce the ITV1 branding having ITV Day made no sense.

Although I do miss having an hour long Lunchtime News.

What I find interesting is that prior to 1989, ITV or 'Independent Television' had no branding as such, only that of the local companies.

'ITV' was stylised in various ways on 'new season' promotions, depending on which ITV company had hosted/designed the promos. Remember the slanty gold one from Autumn 1982, or the red and green one from Autumn 1981 - and the YTV designed stripey one from Autumn 1985.

There were some semi-official ones, I think - the black and white ITV used on letterheads and publications, eg 'IBA Television and Radio' books, and the multicoloured ITV used on Channel Four 'next on ITV' slides for most of the 80s and on the familiar 'ITV Schools on 4' countdown clock.

The first time I saw that, I genuinely thought that I was related to ITV50, and that they were having a day dedicated to celebrating ITV!!

It was definitely some time in Spring 1998. Some of us have discussed it at length on here. I can't remember, but someone ruled out the idents being changed on the same day CITV was revamped and that the cake had already gone by that point. There used to be more videos on youtube of Central around this era and I think we pinpointed the date down to some time in April. It was still in use in March but gone by the last week of April. So, the 20th is plausible, I just wonder whether or not it's an educated guess or whether whoever wrote that actually knows for sure.

By the way, an old style version of the ident where Central flies off the screen, apart from the 't' which morphs onto 'ITV' did exist and I think I've seen it somewhere on youtube continuity clips.

I'm sure we're thrilled to have this discussion again but I was at university in Birmingham when all this was going on. You're right to say there was an version of that Central ITV logo in use because I remember specifically tuning in on the day of the rebrand and the new version of the ident was used at 9.25 to unveil it, but I'd certainly seen it before in its original form.

One other way to narrow it down is that I remember going to the BRMB Party In The Park in May 1998 and all the big screens had the Carltonised Central logo on them, so it had certainly changed by then. I don't remember the actual day it changed but I'm thinking it must have been during April because I think it had changed by the time I came back from the Easter holidays. I had a bit too much time on my hands when I was a student, as you can imagine.

That still leaves us with either the 6 or 20 April Wink Confused

Well exactly. It didn't really sound like was promoting daytime programming - more so, as you say, a specific day, eg. Christmas Day, Budget Day, Judgement Day, 'the regions are dead' day!

The announcer is Roger Tilling, I believe out of the Manchester team only he and Tracey Crawford went to Leeds. On my YT channel I have a couple of Granada clips from Autumn 1998, revolving around Police Camera Action, and the announcements were always generic, never did they on Granada or ITV. There's some clips about somewhere of the introduction to the final News At Ten in 1999 across Granada/Yorkshire/Tyne Tees that were the same.

Coming back to Granada yet again but I still reckon it's a huge assumption that transmission and continuity for Granada moved to Leeds on the same date. There's no real reason why the two would necessarily be timed in such a way and considering a popular theory was that Central dropped its cake on the same day as the reintroduction of in-vision continuity on CITV and this was later disproved, then we should have an open mind about it. Personally, I'm going to stick my neck out and table a theory: up until the end of 1997, Granada's trailers were always Granada branded and done in Manchester. Yorkshire and Tyne Tees (C3NE) had their trailers made in Leeds but despite a common design, they were separately branded as Yorkshire and Channel 3 North East. At the turn of 1998, all three stations were now getting ITV-branded trailers of a common design that had clearly come from Leeds. My guess is that this is when Granada's own presentation department was wound down and that whilst transmission moved to Leeds, Manchester-based continuity remained for a good few months longer. We all know the Manchester announcers were gone by December 1998 but I reckon they were still in place for a while longer, going either in late October or sometime in November.

Think about it this way: new generic ITV idents were expected to be launched on the 5th October and whilst it's natural to think that GMG would go for a Big Bang day and move Granada's transmission and continuity on the same day as the new idents arrived, it would be a lot of hassle for the presentation department in Leeds in terms of looking out for and ironing out any gremlins or teething issues. Also, remember that transmission and continuity very often didn't move together during these years of consolidation. Yorkshire had Tyne Tees' transmission for a few years before unifying continuity.
