If UTV Ireland get GMB for little or nothing I think they'll show it. Otherwise it's likely that they'll just show 2 and half hours of infomercials. Lorraine at 8.30 would be very worrying to Ireland AM. If a breakdown of TV3's Daytime programmes was available I would suspect they would have a over reliance on Saorview only households and second sets with only Saorview. If UTV Ireland offer a different choice on Saorview, Ireland AM's small figures could become a lot smaller.

I doubt that UTV Ireland would be able to show GMB or Lorraine because those programmes are produced by ITV Breakfast Broadcasting Ltd, not ITV Studios Ltd. Although both of those companies are owned by ITV plc, they are legally separate from each other.

I'd have to agree ITN 6:30 news is unlikely but not impossible. UK news programmes are watched in every news watching house in the country. That's why the Angelus is still so popular on RTE One. It gives people the chance to see the headlines on BBC One before they turn over to Six One on RTE. Plus for a time when Sky News Started RTE used to show a full 2 and a half hours a day of SKY news with Irish Headlines at 2 minutes to the hour.

I think it's impossible because ITV News has no direct relevance to the Republic. Besides, UTV Ireland has its own news bulletin at 10 so, even if UTV Ireland wanted to show the ITV News at 6:30, it still wouldn't make sense because 6:30 bulletin includes a preview of stories that will be shown on ITV News at 10.

I would have to disagree. a lot of what happens in the UK has a direct relevance to the Republic. Plus it's normal to have UK news on in Ireland. Go into many banks and business places and the TV station they have on over the waiting queues is the UK BBC News Channel or SKY News. The preview problem can be gotten around if UTV do decide to air it. Having said all that, they probably won't show it.

It comes down to cash. If the shows are cheap UTV will show them. If they cost any real money at all they won't, the audience just isn't there that early in the morning. It would make more sense to show infomercials. Lorraine might be more likely however.

I watched TV3's 5.30 on line tonight. Whilst clearly not RTE in terms of coverage, the bulletin itself wasn't too bad apart from the shocking set!

I'm not a fan of virtual sets, but there are some good examples out there - this one however does TV3 no favours whatsoever.

I'm hoping they're going to do something before UTV arrives?

It was only relaunched last year so I doubt they've anything big in the pipeline on that front.

But I thought the beauty of virtual sets were they were cheap and could be changed easily? The 5.30's is rubbish! Even Mustard TV in Norwich is better!!

Have just watched the 5.30 on TV3 (the sports are now separate so they attach a sponsor) It isn't great but its fine to watch as long as you have another source of News (I would assume many who watch catch at least some of the Six-One on RTE) However, that set is easily the worst on any major broadcaster on these islands. It's constantly moving and the close up and wide shots don't match at all. The Sports reporter appears to be standing a long way away from the Newsreader in one shot, and then in the wide shot she's practically touching the Newsreaders desk.

You'd have to assume that they are basically broadcasting from a very very small space. It might not be possible to have any sort of real set because there's so little room.

In addition to the HD studio, TV3 operate from 2 studios at Ballymount. The main studio used to house real sets for Ireland AM and The Morning Show plus virtual sets for Midday and The 5.30. There is a second small studio for interviews and a summerhouse in the car park where cooking segments used to be recorded.

You can see them on TV3's website.

I was actually giving them the benefit of the doubt about their studio. If they have the room then it only makes their virtual set and the way they use it a lot worse.

It appears that Claire Brock of TV3 News is leaving the station. According to various papers she joins the "exodus to UTV" (Irish Daily Mail's words...not mine!). It seems anyone with sense and with an offer from UTV are leaving TV3. It's not surprising really as UTV put out a realistic financial plan earlier this week where they think they'll be taking 30 million a year in Advertising and half of that will be from TV3.

To be fair that's a conservative figure, but If TV3 lose that much Advertising they're likely to close in a matter of months.

To be fair to anybody in the industry you want to be with a station that will actually survive. Even if UTV Ireland was a complete flop it's unlikely it would close overnight, I wouldn't be as sure about TV3.

The second small studio isn't a 'studio' - its just a (very cramped) office off the main newsroom that now has a backdrop and lighting properly hung after using it for years with no backdrop and an on camera light.
