UKTV: Richard and Judy's new channel to launch in October
Quote:
The BBC and Virgin Media's pay-TV joint venture UKTV is to introduce a major rebrand of channels including UKTV Gold and launch an entertainment service in October that will be home to Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan's new show.

The good news in the article is... "The broadcaster is to phase out UKTV as an on-screen presence and focus more on individual channel brands". I guess it hides the fact some of the channels (eg. Gold) are showing less 'UK' programmes.

I do like the UKTV brand, and I don't see how it needs to 'hide the fact some of the channels (eg. Gold) are showing less 'UK' programmes' - because it's the same as the British BC showing Heroes, for example - it's based in the UK, but that doesn't mean it needs to show UK programming.

However, I think the new brand will be a good thing if it is good - though is it actually a new brand or just a new look?

It's really just becoming a commercial version of the BBC. Do UKTV have to bid for rights to recent BBC programmes against rival broadcasters, or do they just get them automatically?

I can see their position as they position themselves more competitively in the digital market coming into question, especially if Virgin do pull out and they become wholly owned by rhe BBC (through BBC Worldwide).

In its new guise Gold's programming mix will move "away from retro towards comedy", focusing more tightly on shows such as Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers and Little Britain.

Is that actually physically possible??? Shocked

What a poor headline on MG's part. It isn't like the channel will have all things Richard and Judy, 24 hours a day! Laughing

It says that UKTV History, UKTV Documentaries, UKTV People, UKTV Style, UKTV Food, UKTV Drama and UKTV Gardens are expected to be all getting new names, but no mention of UKTV Gold.

I really hope they don't try and repeat the success of Dave. The reason it worked is because it was new and fresh and much easier to remember in comparison to UKTV G2. It's been done successfully so should quit whilst they're ahead. The majority of th other channels have successful brands as they are.

I can see we'll end up with Doris and Betty as channel names soon enough though.

UKTV is also repositioning UKTV Drama to focus on crime drama, with Alibi thought to be one new brand name under consideration for the service.

I quite like this idea. Actually makes sense.

Yes it does. It says UKTV Gold will be renamed 'Gold'.

That will confuse some with the semi-national radio network also named Gold. http://www.mygoldmusic.co.uk/

Yes, but plenty of people watch The X Factor.
