No Katherine, he's right!
i disagree totally - by breaking down unweildy, large regions that a half hour show doesn't do comprehensive coverage to, rectifying that with smaller regions with more targeted news, the BBC is doing quite the reverse to ITV and INVESTING in regional output, news bases located in more local areas (instead of housing three regions under the one roof). More regions (The Hull Look North and the current Look East region in the future) means more focused, dedicated and relevant news articles and features. I prefer to leave luxurious, costly and overbearing sets to those with less fiscal acumen.
The BBC can't win to some people - if they produce what's to some an elaborate and unweildy set, they'd be accused of wasting licence fee-payers' money and the fee-opposers will gladly (amd sometimes gleefully) carp on about it. When they produce a cost-efficient set and operation that does the job, people accuse them of being cheap and nasty.
The BBC are keen to develop up and coming talent and have displayed a desire to invest in that talent by incorporating an Open Centre in with new buildings, and running courses in conjunction with other local training providers at the Centre. I bet that, had the BBC chosen to build Open Centres away from their broadcasting base, people would have moaned on about the expense and 'they should have combined the Open Centre with the Broadcasting Centre" followed by a reminder that licence fee payers would be paying for it!

But, its a young, inexperienced and untested team going out to air with new equipment, techniques and working practices.
Yes - and bearing this in mind, the end result is excellent despite the small errors that are sometimes made. There may be the slight error with camera angle etc.. but most of, if not all live news programming has made the same error of 'unprofessionalism' that Alf Garnett quotes, and are as imperfect. Why are Look North in Hull regarded as more 'unprofessional' and 'shoddy' after doing an identical error to say, Sky News or Points West? I had many reservations about a more local service but all of them have now disappeared.
Maybe Mr Garnett is suffering nothing more than a 'culture shock'....
