Hello TV Forumers,

I'm going to work on a mock for a new CBBC set, i.e. I will produce as a 3D model of a physical room, not make some virtual set background, cos I'm not fond of them.

Basically though, I want to know what you would like to see in the BBC Children's presentation set.

For example, do you think it would be a good idea to have bright colours and bright lights? Or keep it subtle?

Maybe an area for viewers pictures, and contact details? Maybe loads of plasmas? How about a balcony?

Should the studio be big or small? Should it have a door leading to a garden?

Should it have a backstage area?

So I'm throwing it open, looking for some ideas which hopefully I shall combine into a set that CBBC could really use and be proud of.

I've put it in mocks as its an ideas area for a future mock.

Please comment sensibly and not suggest things like having a cage suspended from the lighting rig with a different child in it for every day of the week.

Thanks,
Jugalug

Right, Ideas:
Big Screen so presenters and children phoning in could play games from the CBBC Website.

You mean the sort of door that rolls upwards?

Also should any elements of previous sets be used?

And should it have any from Saturday morning TV Shows?

I think you should have a 3x3 monitor wall again, the one from the yello studio.

You mean a video wall?

Maybe I could make it bigger this time, maybe 5x5 or the widescreen equivalent.

How about glass blocks? Good or bad?

I would keep away from the "Graffiti" "yoof" theme - there's a Welsh language magazine show called Uned 5 which I spent time at last year and that set has the same sort of "garage/tyres/graffiti" theme and I reckon it looks dated and cliched.

Insofar as a "children's continuity suite" is concerned, I would keep it as simple as possible - remember the Saturday morning shows and Blue Peter can cater for the more cluttered "studio" feel. Anything used for programme junctions should be more subtle and less in your face. Some sort of large video area would be good, but not as the sole background. There needs to be a more chilled seating area seperate to this where a presenter can chat, interview or do a more chilled out link. Perhaps a couple of bean bag type chairs with a large 3D Children's BBC word logo or motif in the background would work and a frosted coloured glass surround to give a mini cyclorama effect behind the chairs.

Simiarly, I would keep away from having doors or anything leading off into a garden - Blue Peter has that covered. Garden stuff can work during the summer, but not leading from inside to out and vice-versa on a regular basis.

Yeah, I was going to avoid over grafittiing it up, though if it is done subtly, it could look okay.

It won't be cluttered in any way, I think that would make it look a bit naff.

The seating area is a good idea, and something I was giving some thought to. Beanbags seem a good way of creating them.

I'm not fond of having big screens as the main background, it doesn't feel physical enough if you see what I mean.

But I'm still am not sure about the doors. Sometimes when CBBC links were in TC2, after a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, they became quite stale. When they moved to TC9 however, and there were glass blocks letting in natural light and there were doors leading out onto the outside world. So now they weren't buried somewhere in the middle of TV Centre, they were now right next to the garden and the rest of the world and links became less dry.

The warehouse look in general is a little old - concrete and metal and that sort of thing gets a bit dull to look at after a while, and you do want to keep the attention of the little kiddies.

Another thought is that it might be a good idea to not look so much at what is being thrown in, but how it's being used - the cash-strapped ABC has just a simple key most of the time, although it's used in a number of different ways.

And of course, it goes without saying that a good website is important to bring it all together - so maybe a bit more focus on that somehow..

What about these, do you think these tire easily, I personally like them. What I mean is the actual rig, not the lights or the geezer.

1) You should see New Zealand's TV2 - the presentation is different but the logo is exactly the same (different colours, though).

Here's another one from ABC2, which I don't think has been posted anywhere before: http://www.divshare.com/download/34799-1f3. I've got a few caps of Australian TV stuff so if there's any interest I might start a thread here..

2) I like the rigging sort of thing, it's a nice kind of look - think of all the fun you could have with that.. Very Happy In other words, it's flexible.
